Building a "Golden Nest" to Incubate a "Golden Egg" Steady State | Science | Golden Egg
In the summer, Science Island is quiet as usual, with occasional cicadas chirping. This is a "peninsula" stretching into Dongpu Reservoir in Hefei, Anhui Province. Its name is "Chinese Academy of Sciences Hefei Institute of Material Science".
This small island, with an area of less than 3 square kilometers, is densely covered with large scientific devices such as the "artificial sun" and a steady-state strong magnetic field. A series of major original innovative achievements from 0 to 1 have been transmitted from here like thunder: the "artificial sun" has successfully achieved 403 seconds of steady-state long pulse high constraint mode plasma operation, and the steady-state strong magnetic field has created a magnetic field equivalent to more than 900000 times the Earth's magnetic field
"At present, we are setting new scientific tasks for the 'artificial sun', challenging higher and more sustainable goals such as the 1000 second high constraint mode. At the same time, we are accelerating the pre research of key components for fusion experimental reactors and engineering reactors, laying a solid foundation for China's leapfrog development in fusion!" Standing in front of the shining "Fusion Hefei" slogan, Liu Jianguo, the director of Hefei Institute of Material Sciences, is full of enthusiasm. According to him, the construction of the large-scale scientific facilities "Atmospheric Environment Stereoscopic Detection Experimental Research Facility" and "Strong Photomagnetic Integrated Experimental Facility" is also being accelerated.
Currently, Anhui has built and planned 12 large-scale scientific facilities, and its regional innovation capacity has jumped from 10th place in the country to 7th place. How can this traditional agricultural province achieve a magnificent transformation towards a "source of technological innovation"?
In the late 1960s, the University of Science and Technology of China settled in Anhui, and Anhui did its best to provide scientific researchers with everything they needed. "The seeds of respecting science, encouraging innovation, and caring for scientists were quietly planted at that time," said the relevant person in charge of the Anhui Provincial Department of Science and Technology.
Since then, Anhui has always attracted large institutions and advanced talents to settle in the local area and engage in original innovation with the highest level of attention and support. Currently, Hefei alone has nearly 200 provincial and ministerial level research institutes. Anhui has never been the wealthiest province, but it has always been one of the provinces that is most willing to spend money on science and technology innovation. Throughout, Anhui's social research and development investment has continued to increase, ranking among the top ten in the country.
In fact, Anhui has also given birth to many "firsts" in the past, but due to various reasons, leading technology has not formed a leading industry.
Building a "golden nest" is not enough, we also need to hatch "golden eggs". While becoming a "source of technological innovation", Anhui has made great efforts to build a "gathering place for emerging industries", mobilizing the whole society to continuously apply the latest major achievements of large-scale scientific installations to the market and put them into use, which is known as the "laying eggs along the way" mechanism.
"Relying on a steady-state strong magnetic field device, the first Class 1 innovative targeted drug for acute leukemia in China has emerged," said Zhang Shoubiao, head of the Science Center and Infrastructure Department of Hefei Institute of Materials Science. In addition, based on the high-precision terahertz laser polarization interferometer detection technology of "artificial sun", relevant researchers have established a company and successfully developed multiple high-tech products such as active terahertz human imaging security detector and terahertz digital CT. Nowadays, in Anhui, active terahertz human imaging security devices have been widely used in public transportation, large-scale activities, and other occasions. Security devices use precise "portrait" methods to quickly determine whether there are prohibited items at the security inspection site, with a maximum accuracy of 1 millimeter. The detection can be completed within 1 second, truly achieving radiation free, perception free, touch free, and stop free security checks.
Under a series of policy incentives for achievement transformation, this small island of less than 3 square kilometers has incubated over 300 enterprises directly and through platforms, covering the entire province of Anhui. Its total registered capital exceeds 5 billion yuan, sales revenue is nearly 10 billion yuan, and it has driven employment for over 10000 people.
"The emergence of major scientific and technological achievements is like a thunderbolt on the ground. However, primitive innovation is a silent long-distance race. Anhui has been running for decades, and now it has finally entered spring." The relevant person in charge of the Anhui Provincial Department of Science and Technology sighed.
