BRICS cooperation ushers in a new starting point (Harmony), with historic expansion of members
The expanded BRICS family will have more members, wider coverage, and greater cooperation space, which will further enhance the representativeness and voice of "global southern" countries in global governance, and further strengthen the power of world peace and development
In Johannesburg, South Africa, all parties witnessed another historic moment in the BRICS cooperation process. On the morning of August 24th local time, the 15th special press conference of BRICS leaders announced the invitation to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Iran, and Ethiopia to officially become members of the BRICS family. Starting from January 1st next year, these six countries will become official members of the BRICS. This historic expansion reflects the determination of BRICS countries to unite and cooperate with developing countries, becoming a new starting point for BRICS cooperation.
The increase in the number of BRICS countries from 5 to 11 will further enhance the global influence of the BRICS cooperation mechanism. After this expansion, the BRICS family has seen an increase of 3 Asian members, 2 African members, and 1 Latin American member, further enhancing its global representation. After this expansion, the proportion of the population of BRICS countries in the world has increased from 42% to 47%, the total economic output has increased from 26% to 29%, and the total trade in goods has increased from 18% to 21%. After expansion, the quality and weight of the golden bricks become more abundant.
This historic expansion is in line with the expectations of the international community and the common interests of emerging market countries and developing countries. Currently, changes in the world, times, and history are unfolding in unprecedented ways, and human society has reached a critical juncture. Against the backdrop of the rise of unilateralism and protectionism, the rise of Cold War and zero sum game thinking, and the threat of hegemonism and power politics to world peace and stability, the international community needs to adhere to the positive forces of open cooperation, maintaining peace and stability, promoting development and prosperity, and enhancing exchanges and mutual learning. Emerging market countries and developing countries have mostly emerged from the historical quagmire of colonialism, with a stronger desire to maintain peaceful development and strive for fairness and justice. Emerging market countries and developing countries have contributed up to 80% of world economic growth in the past 20 years, and the global share of GDP has increased from 24% to over 40% in the past 40 years. They have a stronger ability to maintain peaceful development and strive for fairness and justice. The expansion of BRICS members in response to the collective rise of emerging market countries and developing countries will further strengthen the power of world peace and development.
This historic expansion fully demonstrates the attractiveness and appeal of the BRICS countries, and will inject new vitality into the BRICS cooperation mechanism. Over the past 17 years, the BRICS ship has bravely sailed through the wind and waves, forging a path of mutual refinement and win-win cooperation. Adhering to the spirit of openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation, the BRICS countries have continuously expanded cooperation in various fields and made important contributions to world peace and development, which has been widely recognized and supported by the international community. Prior to this meeting, over 40 countries hoped to join the BRICS Cooperation Mechanism, with more than 20 countries officially submitting their applications, fully demonstrating the enthusiasm and desire of emerging market countries and developing countries to unite and strengthen themselves. After this expansion, the BRICS family has more members, wider coverage areas, and greater cooperation space, injecting strong positive energy into the crucial stage of BRICS cooperation, which is carrying on the past and opening up the future.
This historic expansion will further gather the strength of the BRICS and enhance the representation and voice of countries from the "global South" in global governance. The BRICS countries, in order to promote peace and development, pursue fairness and justice together, advocate for mutual benefit and common interests, will continue to deepen unity and cooperation, and play a greater role in global governance. "Saudi Arabia looks forward to developing this kind of cooperation, creating new development and economic opportunities, and elevating our relationship to the desired level." "Egypt looks forward to coordinating and cooperating with BRICS members to achieve the goals of economic cooperation, and issuing a 'global southern' voice on the challenges we face." "The United Arab Emirates agrees with the common vision of BRICS leaders for the future development of humanity... Looking forward to further deepening cooperation with all parties to achieve common prosperity worldwide." "Joining the BRICS cooperation mechanism will provide Argentina with excellent development opportunities and open up a new situation for Argentina." "Iran's accession to the BRICS cooperation mechanism is a historic step." Joining the BRICS cooperation mechanism is a great moment for Ethiopia. "" The new members of the BRICS are sending a message of unity. "The voice of cooperation is the voice of building a better world. After this expansion, the BRICS countries will be more powerful in promoting global governance towards a more just and reasonable direction.
BRICS cooperation has great potential, and the future of BRICS countries is promising. The expanded BRICS family will continue to deepen its strategic partnership, expand its "BRICS+" cooperation model, continuously write a new chapter of unity and cooperation for development between emerging market countries and developing countries, strive to create a peaceful development pattern, and contribute to the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind.
