Breakthrough in Shale Gas Extraction at Atmospheric Pressure in China | HF Well | Shallow Layer
On June 26th, Sinopec deployed the Pingdi 1HF risk exploration well in the Wulong area of Chongqing, which has produced over 8 million cubic meters of gas since its commissioning. The continuous and stable production and high yield breakthrough of this well have proven that shallow atmospheric shale gas has good exploration and development potential.
This well is buried at a depth of about 1000 meters and is a typical shallow atmospheric shale gas. The Pingdi 1HF well was put into operation in April 2021, with a stable daily gas production of 46000 cubic meters. The preliminary evaluation shows that the recoverable reserves of a single well are 40 million cubic meters. The breakthrough of this well has revitalized the shallow atmospheric shale gas with a burial depth of 500-2000 meters and a resource of 97 billion cubic meters in the region.

Shallow atmospheric shale gas wells have advantages such as shallower well depth and lower investment costs. However, compared with high-pressure shale gas, atmospheric shale gas has weaker energy, insufficient gas content, lower single well production, and greater difficulty in efficient extraction. The research team used a liquid driven rodless pump for trial production in this well for the first time, which promoted the release of adsorbed gas and increased production.
The Sinopec Nanchuan Shale Gas Field, where Pingdi 1HF well is located, is the first atmospheric shale gas field in China. Since its commissioning in 2017, it has produced a total of 5.825 billion cubic meters of shale gas, with a current daily gas production of 4.2 million cubic meters. As one of the four major gas source areas for the Sichuan East Gas Transmission, it provides clean energy for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
