Breaking through the illusion of "natural independence" among the younger generation in Taiwan, a series of in-depth talks between scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Strait | Young Generation | Taiwan
How do you view Taiwan's younger generation's view of unification and "independence"? The fourth academic event of the "Cross-Strait Scholars Face to Face" series was held in Beijing on June 30, with Wang Zaihe, former vice president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait, and Zheng Youping, director of the Center for Political and Economic Studies at Taipei University, to conduct in-depth discussions on this issue.
"Is Taiwan's young generation 'natural independence' after all?" "What is the intention of the DPP to concoct this argument?" "From the perspective of practice, is this argument tenable?" ...... At the beginning, Wang Zaixi raised many questions to Zheng Youping, who has been paying attention to the island's youth for a long time.
"There is no" natural independence "at all '." Zheng Youping said that the so-called "natural independence" is an empty term deliberately created. In fact, it is "artificial independence" produced by educational brainwashing and media indoctrination ".
He traced back in detail the process of "de-sinicization" by Lee Teng-hui to the reign of Chen Shui-bian and Tsai ing-wen, and the "Taiwan independence" forces on the island, especially by constantly revising history textbooks to instill the "historical view of Taiwan independence" among young people on the island. dilute the relationship between Taiwan and the mainland of the motherland, and distort the cultural and national identity of the Taiwan people towards the motherland.
"A history textbook affects 200000 Taiwanese students in one year, and it is 2 million in 10 years, and it may affect 4 million people." Zheng Youping said bluntly that the "cultural Taiwan independence project" is extremely harmful, and it is deliberately trying to influence Taiwan's youth, with the purpose of completely "de-sinicization".
"The'Taiwan independence' textbooks have caused great poison to Taiwan's young people, confusing the historical outlook of the young people on the island, unclear the relationship between Taiwan and the mainland, and further weakening national identity." Wang Zaixi said.
During the conversation, the two experts said that for many years, the DPP has continuously instilled in young people on the island such misconceptions as "engaging in 'Taiwan independence' is democracy and freedom," and "resisting China and protecting Taiwan is defending freedom and democracy," which has had a serious negative impact on Taiwan's young people.
"The DPP continues to use Western-style democracy to indoctrinate and brainwash young people in Taiwan, and smear and attack the mainland, making young people in Taiwan think that voting for the DPP is to defend freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law." Zheng Youping said that lies will eventually be punctured. In recent years, the cognition of Taiwan's youth has undergone subtle changes. They began to question: "What exactly does the anti-China protection of Taiwan bring?"
"From the recent polls, it can be seen that the dissatisfaction of young people in Taiwan with the DPP is beyond words, and the'taking off the DPP 'has become the consensus of many young friends in Taiwan." Zheng Youping observed that young people in Taiwan generally do not want war and hope that the two sides of the strait will strengthen interaction and cooperation. The younger generation in Taiwan is forming a new cognition and looking at the fast-developing mainland more objectively. More and more young people from Taiwan come to the mainland to study, work, start a business, pursue their dreams, and find new ways and new spaces.
Wang Zaixi agreed with Zheng Youping's judgment. He believes that the younger generation in Taiwan is beginning to wake up and see more and more clearly that the DPP is not for the good of Taiwan, but for the selfishness of one party, and does not hesitate to let Taiwan compatriots be cannon fodder. The facts fully show that the argument that the younger generation of Taiwan is "natural independence" is completely untenable.
"I have confidence in the future that peaceful reunification will eventually come. With the country as the backing, the future of Taiwan's youth will be brighter." Wang Zaixi said.
The "Cross-Strait Scholars Face-to-Face" series of academic activities are organized by Xiamen University and the Chinese Culture Institute in turn. Each session invites a mainland and Taiwan scholar to have an in-depth conversation on the same issue.
