Brazilian police: Bosonaro's assistant once sought legal advice on "military intervention in election results" in Sid | law | intervention
On June 16th, the Brazilian federal police stated that former President Bosonaro's personal assistant, Mauro Sid Barbosa, sought legal advice for military intervention in the transfer of power after last October's presidential election.
According to Reuters on June 16th, as a military lieutenant colonel, Mauro Sid was one of Bosonaro's personal assistants and continued to serve as an assistant after Bosonaro resigned as president. Sid was recently arrested on charges of forging Bosonaro's COVID-19 vaccination card.
The federal police report states that analysis of Sid's confiscated mobile phone shows that Sid "collected relevant documents" with the aim of "seeking legal and judicial support for the execution of the coup.". The Brazilian federal police also accused Sid of studying the possibility of using armed forces in special circumstances.
The information collected by Sid may serve as the basis for a coup action guide. The police said that this action guide was also found on Sid's mobile phone.
Sid's lawyer Fenelon stated in a statement that his client Sid will only defend the investigators.
The mainstream Brazilian media magazine "Please See" was the first to disclose the existence of the aforementioned coup action plan document. This prompted Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexander de Moris to unseal police reports and additional documents.
Moris is in charge of investigating Bosonaro and his supporters. In last year's general election, left-wing politician Lula narrowly won, and Bosonaro and his supporters took multiple measures before, during, and after the election in an attempt to intervene in the election.
Reuters stated that it is not yet clear whether these documents on Sid's phone were conveyed to Bosonaro at the time.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Brazilian police launched a search of Bosonaro's residence in May. Bosonaro is suspected of entering false information into the COVID-19 vaccination system of the Ministry of Health. During the search, Bosonaro and his wife Michelle's mobile devices were confiscated.
