Blue Hall Observation | Japan's Nuclear Polluted Water Discharging into the Sea "Magic Box" Will Open One's Own Interest Beyond All Human Welfare Countries | Pacific | Welfare
The Japanese government held a cabinet meeting this morning and decided to initiate the discharge of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water into the sea on August 24th. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin reiterated China's solemn stance at today's routine press conference and strongly urged Japan to correct its erroneous decision and withdraw its plan to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly opposes the solemn representations made to the Japanese side
Wang Wenbin stated that the Japanese government, disregarding the serious concerns and resolute opposition of the international community, openly transfers the risk of nuclear pollution to the world and prioritizes its own interests over the long-term well-being of all humanity. This move is extremely selfish and irresponsible. The Chinese side is seriously concerned and strongly opposes it, and has made solemn representations to the Japanese side.
Wang Wenbin pointed out that for over two years, the legitimacy, legality, and safety of the Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge plan have been questioned by the international community. The Japanese side has yet to address major concerns from the international community regarding the long-term reliability of nuclear contaminated water purification devices, the accuracy of nuclear contaminated water data, and the effectiveness of monitoring arrangements for discharge into the sea. China and other stakeholders have repeatedly pointed out that if nuclear contaminated water is safe, there is no need to discharge it into the sea, and if it is not safe, it should not be discharged into the sea. Japan's push to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea is unfair, unreasonable, and unnecessary. Unfortunately, Japan has turned a blind eye to international calls, deliberately creating a false image of safe and harmless discharge into the sea, and even unjustly accusing neighboring countries that express legitimate concerns. Its actions have aroused strong indignation from neighboring countries and domestic people. Wang Wenbin stated that the ocean is a common property of all humanity and Japan cannot be allowed to dump nuclear contaminated water. China will take all necessary measures to maintain the marine environment, food safety, and public health.
Regarding the discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima nuclear power into the sea, China has previously strengthened import controls on Japanese related food. In response to the question of whether the Chinese government is considering introducing new regulatory measures, Wang Wenbin stated that the Chinese government adheres to the principle of putting the people first. The relevant departments will take all necessary measures to maintain food safety and the physical health of the Chinese people.
Wang Wenbin emphasized that China strongly urges Japan to correct its erroneous decision, withdraw its plan to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea, communicate with neighboring countries in good faith with a sincere attitude, properly dispose of nuclear contaminated water in a responsible manner, and accept strict international supervision.
Pacific island countries have suffered from the consequences of nuclear radiation pollution and are highly sensitive to the issue of nuclear pollution. Public information shows that between 1946 and 1958, the United States conducted 67 nuclear weapon tests in the Marshall Islands. From 1957 to 1958, Britain conducted nine nuclear tests in the former colony of Kiribati. From 1946 to 1982, countries such as the United States and Britain also dumped large amounts of nuclear waste into the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. These nuclear tests and nuclear waste have caused persistent negative impacts on the environment and the health of residents in Pacific island countries.
The pain of the island people has not yet dissipated, and the tragedy of history cannot be repeated. Japan's discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the Pacific is related to the marine environment, fisheries, public health, and the interests of future generations. The island nation has publicly expressed their concerns that Japan's nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea may become another major nuclear pollution disaster for the island nation.
Qian Bo pointed out that Pacific island countries are seriously concerned about Japan's Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea and oppose Japan's actions of shifting the risk of nuclear pollution. As a Pacific coastal country, China highly recognizes the concerns of island countries and is willing to work together with them to urge Japan to face the concerns of the international community, fulfill its international legal obligations, stop plans to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea, communicate with Pacific coastal countries in a sincere manner, dispose of nuclear contaminated water responsibly, and accept strict international supervision.
