On August 1st, the Myanmar National Management Council issued an amnesty order, pardoning nearly 8000 prisoners. Myanmar's former State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi and former President Win Min have received a reduction of 6 and 4 years in prison, respectively.
The amnesty order states that the Chairman of the Myanmar State Administration has reduced the sentences of Aung San Suu Kyi in five cases and Wen Min in two cases in accordance with relevant criminal law regulations. A spokesperson for the National Management Commission told reporters that Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence was reduced by a total of 6 years, and Wen Min's sentence was reduced by a total of 4 years. It is reported that after commutation, Aung San Suu Kyi's remaining sentence is over 20 years, while Wen Min's sentence is less than 10 years.
On the same day, the National Management Commission also issued multiple amnesty orders, stating that in celebration of traditional festivals in Myanmar and for humanitarian, national unity, domestic peace, and inter state relations considerations, the Chairman of the National Management Commission, in accordance with relevant provisions of the Constitution and Criminal Law, granted amnesty from the death penalty to life imprisonment to prisoners who met the conditions for sentence reduction nationwide. 7749 Burmese prisoners were pardoned, 125 foreign prisoners were pardoned and deported, 22 members of ethnic armed organizations were pardoned, and 72 individuals related to ethnic armed organization members were dismissed from their cases.
In January, April, and May of this year, the Myanmar National Management Council also pardoned thousands of prisoners.
