Assisted and instigated the murder of over 3300 people? Nazi concentration camp guards before the age of 98 in Germany accused
On the 1st, German prosecutors said that a 98 year old man was accused of assisting and instigating the murder of over 3300 people in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany as a guard.
The prosecutor's office in western Germany's Giessen city stated in a statement that the man worked in the Saxenhausen concentration camp from 1943 to 1945, during which he "assisted in the brutal and insidious killing of thousands of prisoners.". Due to being under 18 years old when he was suspected of committing a crime, he will face trial in a juvenile court.
According to relevant laws, the trial is expected to take place in the city of Hanau near the man's residence. In 2022, his mental assessment showed that he was suitable for trial within a certain range.
According to German law, the prosecution did not disclose the name of the man.
Saxenhausen concentration camp is the closest concentration camp to Berlin, with a total of 220000 people detained between 1936 and 1945, of which approximately 100000 were killed. It is notorious for its early experiments in killing detainees with toxic gas.
Germany is currently intensifying legal accountability for the surviving former Nazis, even if they are in their twilight years and unable to serve their sentences. The German prosecutor previously stated that Germany has a "moral" responsibility towards the victims and their families.
In 2022, a 101 year old former Saxenhausen concentration camp guard was sentenced to 5 years in prison for assisting in the killing of 3518 imprisoned individuals.
