The incident happened on the morning of August 13th, in our friendly neighboring country Pakistan, at the familiar port of Gwadar.

The scene was very dangerous.

According to media reports, the target of terrorist attacks is a convoy of Chinese engineers escorting us. The convoy includes 3 SUVs and 1 van, with a total of 23 Chinese personnel on board.

Fortunately, it is a bulletproof vehicle. In the fierce exchange of fire, the van was shot by terrorists, and the bulletproof glass also showed dense cracks. It is reported that an explosion occurred at the scene.

Casualty situation?

Terrorists claim that 4 Chinese and 9 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the attack. But even Agence France Presse claims that this armed group "often exaggerates the results of the war.".

Pakistani officials announced that "at the end of the operation, two attackers were eliminated," and four Pakistani soldiers were injured. Although the target of the attack was Chinese engineers, they were not injured.

This has also been confirmed by the Chinese side.

The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan subsequently issued a statement stating, "On August 13th, a convoy carrying Chinese citizens was attacked near Gwadar Port in Balochistan Province. The incident did not cause any casualties among Chinese personnel, and the relevant personnel have been properly resettled."

Who did it?

It is also the Balochistan Liberation Army, a very active terrorist organization in Pakistan.

This is not the first time the organization has launched a terrorist attack on a Chinese target.

In April 2022, the Confucius Institute bus at the University of Karachi in Pakistan was hit by a suicide terrorist attack on campus, resulting in four deaths, including three of my Chinese compatriots. It is the organization that did it.

In August 2021, a convoy carrying Chinese personnel was hit by a suicide bombing near Gwadar Port, resulting in one Chinese person being lightly injured, two local children dead, and multiple others injured. It was also done by the organization.

In May 2019, multiple armed militants broke into the Pearl Hotel in Gwadar Port and engaged in a fierce battle with the Pakistani police. In the end, all attackers were killed. Afterwards, the Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for this incident.

In November 2018, the Chinese Consulate in Karachi was attacked by multiple armed militants, and Pakistani police arrived in time. Two Pakistani police officers died while our compatriots were unharmed. Afterwards, the Balochistan Liberation Army also claimed responsibility.

Now, this notorious terrorist organization has once again targeted the Chinese people.

What should we do?

I see that while reporting on the attack, my embassy also solemnly stated:

1. Strongly condemn this terrorist act.

2. It is required that the Pakistani side conduct a thorough investigation into this attack and severely punish the perpetrators. At the same time, relevant departments at all levels in Pakistan are required to take practical and effective measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Given the current security situation, the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan reminds Chinese citizens in Pakistan to be vigilant, strengthen preventive measures, and ensure the safety of life and property.

Finally, what do you think?

Three basic opinions.

Firstly, this must have been a carefully planned terrorist attack.

The goal is the Chinese people in the team.

Obviously, the terrorists carefully planned and knew who was sitting in the convoy, as well as the route of the convoy, and then ambushed in advance and launched a sudden attack.

Secondly, they should have seen security vulnerabilities.

In recent years, Pakistan has experienced multiple terrorist attacks. The Pakistani side has repeatedly promised to protect the safety of Chinese friends in Pakistan. The Pakistani side has indeed taken many measures and thwarted multiple possible attacks.

This terrorist attack, fortunately, the Pakistani security department responded effectively and promptly repelled the terrorist attack; The Chinese personnel are still riding in bulletproof cars, and have made great contributions in critical moments.

Of course, the potential security vulnerabilities that may exist in this process must still be reflected on and prevented in advance.

Thirdly, these terrorists should be severely punished without mercy.

I worked in Pakistan for a long time before interviewing the Afghan war in 2001. The friendship between Pakistanis and Chinese people is beyond doubt, but the severe anti-terrorism situation in Pakistan is also an undeniable fact.

Especially the so-called "Balochistan Liberation Army", it can be said that their hands are stained with the blood of Chinese and Pakistani people.

The two most memorable times for me were in 2022, when three of my teachers from Confucius Institutes were killed by the organization's suicide terrorist attacks.

At that time, Shabaz Sharif, who had just become the Prime Minister of Pakistan, personally came to the Chinese Embassy and specifically wrote the following paragraph on the embassy letterhead with the Chinese national emblem pattern:

We are deeply shocked and distressed by the shameful attacks against our "iron brothers". All Pakistanis express their condolences for their deaths and extend their condolences to the families of the victims. We are committed to eliminating all armed and terrorist elements on Pakistani territory. We will not rest until the culprits are caught and punished.

These statements still carry a lot of weight.

Another time, in 2018, my consulate in Karachi was attacked by a terrorist attack. Fortunately, the Pakistani police quickly arrived, and Chinese diplomats and their families were ultimately unharmed.

In the fierce exchange of fire at that time, three terrorists were killed and two Pakistani police officers died. They are really heroes. Without them fighting hard, the consequences would be unimaginable.

In this terrorist attack, the widely acclaimed Pakistani female police chief Suhai also appeared.

The photo of her pulling out her gun and rushing towards the scene is impressive. On social media, many people praise her as the "daughter of Sindh" or "daughter of Pakistan".

Why are some terrorist activities targeting China?

This precisely illustrates the complexity of the current situation in Pakistan. It is true that Pakistan is a close ally, but the close relationship between China and Pakistan has also made China a target of some terrorists, attempting to exert pressure on the Pakistani government.

It is worth noting that the Pakistani government has repeatedly stated that the country's terrorist and separatist movements have been influenced by third-party forces from the international community. But no matter which force creates a terrorist attack, it will inevitably come at a cost, and it is a significant cost.

Otherwise, Chinese people will not agree, and Pakistani people will not agree either.

Finally, we must pay tribute to the heroes of Pakistan. In a word, without their courage and sacrifice, the consequences would be truly unimaginable. The previous Karachi consulate terrorist attack was like this, and the Gwadar terrorist attack is also like this!

Of course, the situation remains severe, and protection cannot be compromised.

The terrorist attack on August 13th is not the first time, and it will definitely not be the last.
