On August 11th local time, the Ecuadorian police confirmed that the seven suspects arrested on suspicion of murdering the country's presidential candidate, Villavesensio, are all Colombian nationals. One of them was injured in a firefight with the police and died of severe injuries after being arrested. The Minister of the Interior of Ecuador has released the names of six suspects in custody.
The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement after the assassination attempt, strongly condemning this criminal act and expressing solidarity with Ecuador and condolences to the families of the victims.

On the evening of August 9th local time, Ecuadorian presidential candidate Villavesensio was attacked and killed by multiple armed militants while leaving the capital Quito after participating in a campaign. The presidential election in Ecuador will be held on August 20th.
