Align with WeChat? Musk announces: X will launch voice and video call functions
On Thursday, August 31st local time, Musk announced on social media platform X that X users will no longer need a phone number to use voice and video calling functions on iOS devices, Android devices, and computers. However, Musk did not disclose when these features will be available to users.
Last October, Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion. Musk stated that acquiring Twitter was a catalyst for creating the universal application X, believing that acquiring Twitter could shorten the time required to build X. In addition, Musk revealed in November last year that he was interested in creating an application similar to WeChat. WeChat is a super application that has evolved from instant messaging services, providing various services from social media, gaming to fintech.
However, social platforms that offer voice and video calling services are not uncommon. Facebook's parent company Meta launched voice and video calling features on Messenger as early as 2015. Snapchat added these features in 2016.
