Reporters learned from the National University of Defense Technology on July 3 that Ling Yongshun, an academician of the CAE Member and professor of the National University of Defense Technology, died in Beijing on July 2, 2023 at the age of 86.
Ling Yongshun, academician of CAE Member and professor of National University of Defense Technology.
Ling Yongshun, born in Dingyuan, Anhui Province in April 1937, is a member of the CPC. He is a famous expert in the field of electronic countermeasures in China, a pioneer and founder in the field of electronic jamming technology. In 1997, he was elected as an academician of the CAE Member, and is a professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Electronic Countermeasures of the National University of Defense Technology.
Ling Yongshun was assigned to work at the Military Engineering College after graduating from Beijing Normal University in 1960. He has proposed plasma stealth and active infrared interference methods to solve major technical problems in radar/infrared combined countermeasures. He has achieved multiple groundbreaking research results in key technologies such as plasma interference, strategic ballistic missile mid stage stealth, strategic ballistic missile re-entry penetration, and infrared thermal imaging for countermeasures.
Ling Yongshun has won one second prize of the National Technology Invention Award, four second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, four first prizes of the Military Science and Technology Progress Award, three second prizes of the Military Science and Technology Progress Award, as well as multiple awards such as the Major Contribution Award for Professional Technology of the People's Liberation Army of China and the 2006 Military Science and Technology Innovation Group Award. He has been awarded as an outstanding teacher, an outstanding party member, and a exemplary individual of the former General Staff Department. Ling Yongshun is in the laboratory.
Ling Yongshun is a top student from an educational family, with four successful candidates from his ancestors. His grandfather was the first director of education in Dingyuan County, and his father was a primary school teacher in Fengyang. Ling Yongshun attended a private school at the age of six and later completed primary and junior high school education in Dingyuan.
He once said, "Our ancestors were all engaged in education, and we dream of taking the path of teaching and educating people to serve our country in the future."
Ling Yongshun once joined the army twice to fulfill his dream of serving the country. The first time was after graduating from Beijing Normal University in 1960, when he enlisted in the military and was assigned to Harbin Military Engineering Institute as a teaching assistant. However, one year later, due to unforeseen circumstances, he went to a military academy in Xi'an to work as a physics teacher.
In 1979, the Electronic Engineering College of the People's Liberation Army was established in Hefei, and Ling Yongshun joined the military for the second time, once again stepping onto the podium of the military academy.

For many years, he has silently worked in his teaching position and aimed at the forefront of electronic warfare development. He has tirelessly worked hard and achieved many creative and pioneering major scientific research results, making significant contributions to national defense construction. He is undoubtedly the pioneer and founder of China's electronic interference technology field.
Ling Yongshun in his youth.
Ling Yongshun is brave enough to constantly challenge new fields. In 1987, Ling Yongshun, who had passed his destiny, decided to carry out scientific research on a major global scientific research problem with strong patriotism. But this topic was a difficult "forbidden zone" to conquer at that time. In the extremely scarce objective conditions, Ling Yongshun and his research team overcame numerous difficulties and achieved breakthroughs in key technologies.
During the high-temperature test of this project, Ling Yongshun's body suffered serious damage. Due to frequent exposure to toxic substances during the experiment, he later underwent multiple surgical treatments. But Ling Yongshun felt that everything was worth it. In his own words, "It's worth living a few years less to overcome this difficult problem."
In 1992, the above achievements were awarded the highest invention award by the country. Ling Yongshun was invited to attend the National Science and Technology Awards Conference and was warmly received by the leaders of the Party and the state.

While striving to climb the technological peak, Ling Yongshun also pays special attention to cultivating talents. He once said, "To engage in scientific research, one must have a good academic atmosphere, be rigorous, pragmatic, and willing to contribute."
