"Abnormally Direct": Biden urges Israeli Prime Minister not to hastily push forward judicial reform | Netanyahu administration | Israel
According to Agence France Presse, US President Biden has urged the Netanyahu administration not to rush forward with controversial judicial reforms.
The report stated that on July 19th, Biden unusually directly criticized the internal affairs of his close ally Israel. Biden told New York Times columnist Friedman that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu should act with caution.
Friedman quoted Biden as saying, "It is clear that Israelis have strong opinions in this area... reaching consensus on controversial policy areas means time. This is crucial for major changes. Therefore, I suggest that Israeli leaders should not act too hastily."
The report pointed out that Biden made these remarks in a rare interview with print media, but considering Friedman's large audience in the field of foreign policy and the US Israeli political arena, these remarks seem to be targeted.
Since the Netanyahu government announced its judicial reform plan in January, Israel has erupted in multiple rounds of large-scale demonstrations. Once the relevant bill is passed, it will give the ruling coalition the final decision-making power in all personnel appointments in the judicial sector. In addition, the judicial reform plan also seeks to pass legislation that grants parliament the power to overturn Supreme Court rulings.
Israeli public opinion points out that if the judicial reform of the Netanyahu government is implemented, it will be the most "disruptive" political change in Israel since its founding in 1948.
