The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on the 19th that a senior Japanese diplomat stationed in the United States was injured in an attack last month. According to American media reports, the case is a hate crime against Asians.
The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Yuzo Yoshioka, currently 62 years old, is the Consul General of the Japanese Consulate General in Portland, Oregon. He was pushed down by a woman while walking alone in the center of Portland at around 13:20 on the 17th of last month, and his head hit the road, injuring him. He was admitted to the hospital for treatment and was discharged on the same day. He has returned to work.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not provide detailed information on the suspect's identity, citing that the case is still under investigation.
According to American media reports, Yoshioka told the police that the woman "pushed him down for no reason". The police said that when Yoshioka was sent to the hospital, his head was bleeding profusely. The attacker is 23 years old and is believed to be a homeless person, charged with hate crimes and other charges. She attacked a 76 year old Asian man in August last year.
