8-year-old girl dies during detention by US border patrol Independent Supervisor: Tragedy could have been avoided | Alvarez | Death Independent Supervisor
On May 17th this year, 8-year-old immigrant girl Alvarez died while being detained by US border patrol in Texas, USA. Her mother requested medical assistance at least three times that day, but was ignored. On July 18th, Paul Wise, an independent supervisor appointed by a federal judge, stated that Alvarez's death was an "avoidable tragedy".
Paul Wise believes that Alvarez's experience has sparked social attention to the immigration management system at the southern border of the United States. In his report to the Federal District Court in Los Angeles, he pointed out that the death of the 8-year-old girl was caused by a series of errors by personnel from the United States Customs and Border Protection.
According to the US Customs and Border Protection, 8-year-old girl Alvarez and her family have been detained by border patrol at a facility in Harlingen, Texas. On May 17th, Alvarez and her mother sought help from the medical department at least three times. During this period, Alvarez experienced symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain, and epilepsy, but the medical department stated that the girl's condition was stable.
Alvarez's mother stated that the children had difficulty breathing for a considerable period of time, but the border patrol did not do anything for them, even ignoring their hospitalization requests, which directly led to Alvarez's death.
Previously, there were multiple incidents in the United States where underage illegal immigrants died while being detained by the US, which attracted widespread attention and criticism.
