Tokyo, Japan, People Oppose Nuclear Sewage Discharge into the Sea
On July 17th, according to Kyodo News, a recent public opinion survey conducted by the media showed that more than 80% of Japanese people believe that the Japanese government's explanation of the discharge of nuclear wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea is not sufficient.
Japan's Kyodo News Agency conducted a nationwide telephone public opinion survey from the 14th to the 16th, with a total of 1034 valid respondents. The results showed that the support rate for the Japanese cabinet dropped to 34.3%, a decrease of 6.5 percentage points from the previous survey, which is the lowest number for this cabinet. The disapproval rate increased by 7 percentage points compared to the last survey, to 48.6%. Kyodo News Agency stated that the significant drop in cabinet support indicates a growing sense of distrust among the public towards the government. The support rate of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party also dropped to 30.1%, the lowest since December 2012.
When asked if the discharge of nuclear wastewater into the sea would have a negative impact on Japan, 15.8% of respondents believed that it would trigger many negative evaluations, while 71.6% believed that it would to some extent. In addition, over 80% of respondents believe that the Japanese government's explanation of the discharge of nuclear wastewater into the sea is not sufficient.
