The 2023 Global Digital Economy Conference, which recently concluded, released data showing that as of the end of May this year, China has built a total of 2.844 million 5G base stations, with over 2.05 billion mobile IoT terminal users. It is the first major economy in the world to achieve more "thing" connections than "person" connections, and the cornerstone of digital economy development is increasingly consolidated.

This year marks the fourth year of the landing of 5G commercial licenses. Over the past four years, the number of 5G base stations in China has rapidly increased, with new applications, scenarios, and formats continuously emerging. Experts point out that the development of 5G has entered a critical period of large-scale development.

Accelerate upgrade to "use well"

At present, China has built the world's largest and most advanced broadband network infrastructure. Zhao Zhiguo, Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, pointed out that the deployment and scale application of 5G construction have been solidly promoted, accelerating the upgrade from "well built" to "well used".

In terms of network construction, we have achieved "5G connectivity between counties". As of the end of May this year, China has built and opened a total of 2.844 million 5G base stations, covering all prefecture level and county level urban areas. More than 16000 virtual private networks have been built in the 5G industry, effectively meeting the personalized needs of vertical enterprises for data localization and management autonomy. The number of 5G mobile phone users reached 651 million, accounting for 38.1% of mobile phone users.

In terms of integrated applications, 5G applications have been integrated into 60 out of 97 national economic categories, with a cumulative number of application cases exceeding 50000. It is understood that the application of 5G in the industrial field has gradually penetrated into the core links of production and operation, and the 5G+emergency treatment system has been built and used in more than 70 prefecture level cities. The proportion of 5G applications in the top 50 coal enterprises in China is as high as 72%.

In terms of technological innovation, 5G technology capabilities continue to break through. A relatively complete 5G system, chip, terminal, instrument and other industrial chains have been built, and the capabilities of popular bandwidth, network slicing, edge computing and so on have been constantly improved.
