45000 square meters of murals in Mogao Grottoes
The digitalization process has passed halfway
The rapid development of digital technology has not only greatly changed people's lives, but also brought cultural heritage into the public's view in a more vibrant manner. According to the Dunhuang Research Institute, out of the 45000 square meters of wall paintings in the Mogao Grottoes, 26000 square meters have been digitized, and the digitalization process has exceeded half.
As early as the late 1980s, the Dunhuang Research Institute proposed the concept of "Digital Dunhuang", using computer technology and digital image technology to achieve permanent preservation and sustainable utilization of Dunhuang grotto cultural relics. Nowadays, with just one mobile phone, one can travel to Dunhuang, move the mouse, and see 30 high-definition caves in front of them. Digital technology provides rich means and paths for the protection of cultural heritage, allowing cultural relics to come to life. Visitors can experience the wonderful art of Mogao Grottoes thousands of miles away on the internet and cloud without leaving their homes.
Compared to photography creation, digital work requires more standardization, standardization, and process. In the implementation process of "Digital Dunhuang", a series of standards such as collection, processing, storage, display, exchange, and metadata have broad promotion and demonstration effects in the industry. Now, the digital technology of Dunhuang Grottoes has been promoted to 14 cultural heritage sites in 7 provinces across the country, and gradually promoted to countries along the "the Belt and Road". The rich and diverse Dunhuang cultural theme exhibitions also continue to amaze the world.
