411 athletes, China delegation established for the Chengdu Universiade: over 700 people make up the key | Chengdu | university students
On July 12th, the founding ceremony of the Chinese College Student Sports Delegation for the 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu was held in Changchun, Jilin Province. Athletes, coaches, and related personnel of the delegation will participate in the conference through a combination of online and offline methods.
The Chinese delegation of the Chengdu Universiade is composed of more than 700 people. Among them, 411 athletes from more than 100 universities in 25 provinces across the country will participate in all 18 major events of the Chengdu Universiade. The average age of the athletes is 22.9 years, with 206 male athletes, accounting for 50.1 per cent; 205 female athletes, accounting for 49.9 per cent; 387, accounting for 94.2 per cent, participating in the World University Summer Games for the first time; 344, accounting for 83.6 per cent, representing their country for the first time in a comprehensive World Games; 24, accounting for 5.8 per cent, have participated in previous Universiade; 34, accounting for 8.2 per cent, have participated in the Olympic Games.
According to reports, the Chengdu Universiade has been postponed twice. In order to minimize the impact of the epidemic on the participation of student athletes, the International Sports Federation has broadened the qualifications of athletes, and the age of participation has been adjusted from the original "18 to 25 years old" to "18 to 27 years old", the original "only for college students who are in school and have graduated for no more than one year" was adjusted to "allow college students who graduated in 2020, 2021, and 2022 within three years to participate". The decision has increased the selection space for athletes from member countries and regions, and has also created an opportunity for college athletes who missed the Chengdu Universiade due to the impact of the epidemic to return to the field.
In order to do a good job in organizing the Chinese delegation to participate in the competition and prepare for the war, the China University Sports Association has formulated a thorough work plan for organizing the group. According to the idea of "one policy," athletes who are qualified for the Chengdu Universiade are jointly selected with the State General Administration of Sports through trials and other means.
From April to May 2023, the China University Sports Association successively organized 11 trials for swimming, taekwondo, martial arts, rowing, judo, badminton, table tennis, tennis, archery, rhythmic gymnastics, and fencing. 1753 people from 279 colleges and universities participated in the competition, with a total of 1739 games. At present, the sports teams participating in 18 major events are seizing the final key preparation period, actively training hard, and strive to welcome the arrival of the Chengdu Universiade in the best competitive state.
