According to today's Russian television website on June 30th, Anil Sukrar, the coordinator of BRICS affairs in South Africa, said that multiple countries are interested in joining the BRICS group composed of major emerging economies because the group is firmly committed to supporting developing countries, including Africa.
Sukrar explained in an interview with today's Russian television website that the BRICS countries have become the main voice of developing countries and have been pushing for reforms to the Western led global governance structure.
He said, "Our records over the past 15 years indicate that we have been consistent and have been calling for comprehensive reforms to the global governance architecture... This architecture is outdated and completely inconsistent with the global reality of 2023."
The BRICS countries are composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on June 29th that the country has applied to join the BRICS Cooperation Mechanism and believes that this is crucial for ensuring its national interests.
In addition to this East African country, more than 10 countries including Iran, Egypt, Bangladesh, Algeria, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia are consulting on joining the BRICS.
Sukrar told reporters that "25 to 30 countries" have informally expressed a strong desire to become members of the BRICS family.

He said that developing countries are feeling frustrated by their continuous marginalization, which has prompted them to turn to the BRICS group, which is working to create a multipolar and more inclusive world.
He emphasized, "We are no longer weak and powerless. Developing countries are exercising their rights to have equal say in determining the future direction of this emerging multipolar world."
According to reports, the population of BRICS countries accounts for over 40% of the world's total population, and their total economic output accounts for approximately 26% of the world.
South Africa is the rotating presidency of the BRICS countries and will host the 15th BRICS Leaders Meeting in Johannesburg in August this year.
Sukrar stated that this summit is an important event for South Africa and emphasized that Pretoria will use its membership in the BRICS countries to safeguard the interests of the African continent.
