The fire department of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, said on the 8th that the number of fatalities in the building collapse accident that occurred in the city on the 7th has risen to 14, with 7 others rescued.
The fire department reported that the on-site search and rescue work has been completed. 50 firefighters participated in the search and rescue with the help of volunteers. Three people rescued from the ruins have been taken to nearby hospitals, and four others were found to have minor injuries outside the house. To ensure safety, residents in six buildings near the collapsed building were evacuated on the 7th.
It is reported that the collapsed building was built in the 1970s and its structure was not strong enough. The local government department said that the collapsed building has been banned from living since 2010 and has since been occupied by some homeless people.
This is another building collapse that occurred in Pernambuco this year. On April 27th, a three story building collapsed and caught fire in the city of Olinda, causing 6 deaths and 5 injuries.
