10 deaths caused by an attack in the English speaking area of Cameroon
The Ministry of National Defense of Cameroon issued a statement on the evening of the 16th local time, stating that an attack occurred in the capital of the northwest region of the English speaking region, Bamenda, resulting in 10 deaths and 2 serious injuries.
The communique stated that around 7:30 pm on the 16th, more than ten separatist armed militants opened fire "fiercely and indiscriminately" towards the public near a bar in Bamenda, resulting in the death of 10 people, including women. The injured have been sent to the local hospital for treatment, and the authorities are searching for the attackers.
The official languages of Cameroon are French and English, and the population of the English speaking region accounts for about 20% of the total population, mainly residing in the Northwest and Southwest regions. Since October 2016, protests have continued in the English speaking area of Cameroon, with local residents accusing the central government of long-term neglect of the development of the area. Starting from October 2017, some radical separatists have frequently carried out attacks and kidnappings in the local area, and have clashed with Cameroonian security forces.
