According to Yonhap News Agency, on August 3rd, two days after the 25th World Boy Scout Congress began in scorching weather, officials said that a total of 108 people were taken to hospitals due to heat related illnesses at the opening ceremony of the convention.
According to reports, the World Boy Scout Conference, also known as the "Cultural Olympics for Young People," was held on the evening of the 2nd. Approximately 43000 young Boy Scouts from 158 countries and regions gathered at a large campsite in the Xin Wan Jin Reclamation Area on the southwest coast of South Korea.
The organizing committee stated that a total of 108 participants experienced symptoms related to high temperatures, while 31 others experienced headaches, stomach pain, or musculoskeletal injuries during the activity. As of 9am on the 3rd, there are still two people receiving treatment at the hospital in the camp.
According to the report, the organizing committee stated that it will deploy an additional 30 doctors and 60 nurses as medical staff, and increase the number of hospital beds from the current 70 to 220.
As the event approached its final stage, several people fell and the fire department requested the organizing committee to stop the event, but only the final fireworks ceremony was cancelled.
According to reports, at a press conference held later that day, the Secretary General of the Organizing Committee, Cui Changxing, promised to take measures to better protect the Boy Scouts from the impact of the heat wave.
