10520 meters! Geology | Difficulty | Chuanke
At 10:30 am on July 20th, the world's first Wanmike exploration well with the most complex geological conditions and the highest drilling difficulty - Shendi Chuanke 1 Well - began drilling in the Sichuan Basin.
The well is located in the Jiange latent structure in the northwest of Sichuan Basin, with a surface elevation of 717 meters and a designed depth of 10520 meters. It was drilled to a depth of 20 meters before the Sinian system. Multiple sets of high-quality reservoirs are stacked in the ultra deep layers of the region, with superior reservoir formation conditions. Once successful, it is expected to discover new ultra deep scale natural gas storage target areas.
Ten thousand meter deep oil and gas drilling is a super engineering project in the global oil and gas exploration field, facing many world-class challenges, and has become an important indicator of the level of engineering technology and equipment of a country or enterprise. Zhao Luzi, a technical expert at PetroChina Southwest Oil and Gas Field Company, introduced that due to its complex geological structure, the Shendi Chuanke 1 well has been benchmarked against 13 global engineering difficulty indicators, of which 7 difficulty indicators rank first in the world.

According to expert estimates, the pressure system faced by the Shendi Chuanke 1 well can reach up to 10 sets, which is 2-5 times that of other ten thousand meter deep wells, making it the most complex ten thousand meter deep well in the world's pressure system. The vertical irregular and frequently changing pressure coefficient will bring unprecedented challenges to drilling engineering. Not only that, under 10000 meters, the high temperature of 224 degrees Celsius can make metal drilling tools as soft as noodles. The 138 megapascals ultra-high pressure environment is like diving into the deep sea at 13800 meters, far exceeding the seawater pressure in the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the Earth's oceans. It is prone to complex accidents such as wellbore collapse, blowout and leakage, and material failure.
The implementation of the Shendi Chuanke 1 well has opened up a new field of strategic succession for the 10000 meter ultra deep layer on land in China. It will further reveal the evolution secrets beneath the Sinian strata, and is of great significance for exploring large-scale oil and gas resources in the 10000 meter ultra deep layer, innovating the formation of China's ultra deep oil and gas reservoir geological theory, and promoting the progress of China's core technology and equipment capabilities in oil and gas engineering.
