Younger and younger students relay to sea, seniors graduate on the deck, and the polar ship "Snow Dragon 2" welcomes strong winds, waves, and heavy rain for scientific research | Ocean | Senior
On June 17th, at the mouth of the Yangtze River estuary, there were strong winds, waves, and heavy rain... On the first independently built polar scientific research icebreaker in China, the "Xuelong 2", a group of young graduates stood full of helicopter aprons, and the tassels on their degree hats swayed non-stop in the wind and rain
On the same day, more than 70 2023 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral graduates from the School of Oceanography at Shanghai Jiao Tong University bid farewell to their alma mater, senior teachers, secretaries, principals, and academicians on the deck with a special graduation ceremony on the big river and sea. At the same time, their junior students, 37 undergraduate students of the 2020 cohort, took the baton heading towards the sea from their senior students and boarded the "Snow Dragon 2", which is about to start a one week sea practice course.

Graduated from "Joint Construction of Departments and Departments" and sailed far away
With the guidance and support of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Second Institute of Oceanography under the Ministry of Natural Resources explored a new model of integrating science and education to build an ocean college in 2018. The following year, the ocean college began to recruit undergraduate students. Coincidentally, the "Xuelong 2" was also delivered for use in 2019. As the first polar scientific research ship in the world to use two-way ice breaking technology at bow and stern, it can continuously break the ice in an ice environment 1.5 meters thick, filling the gap in the field of major equipment for polar scientific research in China, and cruising around China's Great Wall Station in Antarctica, Zhongshan Station, Kunlun Station, Mount Taishan Station, as well as the Yellow River Station in the Arctic, and China Ice Arctic Scientific Research Station all year round.

Today, on this "national treasure", these 31 students became the first undergraduate graduates of the entire college. 84% of them chose to continue their studies, and more than half of the students stayed at the college through recommendation or entrance exams, continuing to deepen their development in the marine field. Among the 2023 master's and doctoral graduates, some went to central ministries and provincial and municipal grassroots to become selected students serving the people, while others went to marine research institutions such as the Polar Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Second Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the China Shipbuilding Science Research Center to realize the Blue Dream.
The Jiefang Daily Shangguan News reporter learned that Shanghai Jiao Tong University signed a cooperation and co construction agreement with the Polar Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources in 2021, and was recognized as one of the first and only science and education integration and co construction platforms for universities in China that year. Nowadays, it has a national first-class undergraduate program construction site in the Ocean Science major of the Ocean College.

Practice of Trawl Sampling at Sea
After the graduation ceremony that withstood the test of wind and rain, the collaborative "Xuelong 2" science and education integration teaching voyage also set sail. After 90 Jiaotong University teachers and students boarded the "Xuelong" ship last year, from June 17th to 22nd this year, 50 Jiaotong University teachers and students will take the "Xuelong 2" ship for maritime practice in the East China Sea.

On the basis of meeting the needs of the 2023 maintenance and sea trial work of the "Xuelong 2", Shanghai Jiao Tong University utilizes the advantages of the scientific research platform of the Polar Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources to jointly build this internationally leading high-quality course in marine practice, covering six major marine research directions: physics, chemistry, biology, geology, technology, and ecology.
On that day, the teachers and students of this voyage boarded the ship and settled down, preparing to depart the next day. After they board the ship, they need to carry out emergency drills such as abandonment drills and fire drills, and carry out safety education to enhance maritime safety awareness. During the internship at sea, under the guidance of professional teachers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Polar Center, students will be divided into groups to conduct sea navigation observations. The homework content includes: deploying seawater temperature and salinity depth profilers in the midship, vertical trawling of plankton, stern box type and multi tube sediment sampling, etc. In addition to practical homework, the course also arranges polar scientific research report meetings and themed educational activities to guide students to understand marine scientific research, establish patriotism, and cultivate young marine leaders who combine science and technology.
