Who is leading the way in over a thousand vocational colleges across ten major categories? Shanghai's 18 universities are on the list, and there is no shortage of vocational colleges. The national university ranking includes vocational colleges, universities, and vocational colleges
Vocational colleges are an indispensable part of China's higher education system, and in several ranking systems of universities, undergraduate and higher education institutions are predominant, while vocational colleges are rare.
On July 3rd, higher education professional evaluation institutions released the "2023 Ranking of Soft Science Chinese Vocational Colleges" for the first time, targeting more than 1000 vocational colleges in China. To ensure the comparability of ranking results, the soft science department divides vocational colleges into 10 categories based on the school's own positioning and student distribution, and uses a differentiated indicator system to rank them separately. Public institutions are divided into 9 types: comprehensive, science and engineering, teacher training, agriculture and forestry, medicine, finance and economics, politics and law, sports, and arts. Private institutions are ranked separately as one type.
In the first ranking, Jinhua Vocational and Technical College ranked first among 226 comprehensive colleges, while Tianjin Vocational University and Guangzhou Panyu Vocational and Technical College also ranked in the top three. Shaanxi Industrial Vocational and Technical College ranks first in science and engineering colleges, Guangxi Preschool Teachers College ranks first in teacher training colleges, Jiangsu Agriculture and Forestry Vocational and Technical College ranks first in agriculture and forestry colleges, Tianjin Medical College ranks first in pharmaceutical colleges, Shandong Business Vocational and Technical College ranks first in finance and economics colleges, Zhejiang Police Officer Vocational College ranks first in politics and law colleges, Guangzhou Sports Vocational and Technical College ranks first in sports colleges, Shanghai Arts and Crafts Vocational College ranks first in arts colleges, and Shaoxing Vocational and Technical College leads among 253 private colleges.
On the national ranking, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Jiangsu and other provinces have performed outstandingly. Since the launch of the "Double High Plan" in 2019, Shanghai has made multiple efforts in higher vocational education, promoting the construction of high-level vocational schools and professional groups, and consolidating the strategic foundation of Shanghai's technical and skilled talents. In the 2023 ranking of vocational colleges, there are a total of 10 public vocational colleges in Shanghai on the list. Among them, as a high-level school construction unit of the "Double High Plan", Shanghai Vocational College of Arts and Crafts leads the city's vocational colleges and ranks first in the national literary and artistic category rankings.
Private higher vocational education in Shanghai has also performed well, with 8 universities on the national list of private higher vocational education and occupying 4 out of the top 10 in the private sector, which is commendable. Among them, Shanghai Donghai Vocational and Technical College ranks 4th in the country, Shanghai Business and Vocational and Technical College ranks 7th in the country, Shanghai Jiguang Vocational and Technical College ranks 8th in the country, and Shanghai Sibo Vocational and Technical College ranks 10th in the country.
The Jiefang Daily Shangguan News reporter learned that the ranking of vocational colleges adheres to classification evaluation, and its evaluation system includes six evaluation modules: moral education, educational positioning, teaching staff, training conditions, student development, and serving society. It is divided into 27 evaluation dimensions and embedded with 57 evaluation indicators. From the proportion of dual teacher teachers to the number of awards in student skill competitions, the number of indicators related to talent cultivation reaches over 80%. Timely and rich objective data is used to monitor and evaluate the educational level of Chinese vocational colleges, aiming to provide reference for eligible students and parents to understand the latest situation of over a thousand vocational colleges nationwide, and to provide data support for managers and researchers to compare and analyze the educational level and characteristics of vocational colleges.
