This year, he has been teaching on campus for a full 70 years. This academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a contributor to education in Shanghai has left
On the evening of the 28th, East China University of Science and Technology issued an obituary to mourn academician Hu Ying. According to the obituary, Comrade Hu Ying, a member of the CPC, an academician of the CAS Member, a famous Chinese chemical engineer, a meritorious figure in Shanghai education, a professor of East China University of Science and Technology, and a doctoral supervisor, died at 3:14 on August 27, 2023 at Zhongshan Hospital at the age of 89.
The Jiefang Daily Shangguan News reporter learned that Academician Hu Ying was born on June 19, 1934 in Shanghai, with ancestral roots in Yingshan County, Hubei Province. He joined the CPC in 1953, graduated from the Department of Chemical Machinery of East China Institute of Chemical Technology in the same year and stayed at the school. He has successively served as assistant, lecturer, associate professor and professor of the Department of Chemistry. In 1993, he was elected as an academician of the CAS Member.
As a great master in the field of chemical engineering and physical chemistry in China, Academician Hu Ying has served as the Director of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Engineering Chemistry under the Ministry of Education, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Chemical Society, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Chemical Society, and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Chemical Engineering, Journal of Chemistry, and Fluid Phase Equilibria. In 1985, he was awarded the title of model worker of Shanghai, the title of young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions in 1986, and the title of Shanghai education hero in 2008.
For a full 70 years of teaching at school, he stepped onto the three foot podium and became a truly outstanding teacher. The students he has taught can always remember the scene of his class clearly, and he attaches great importance to the blackboard writing in classroom teaching. He said, "A good blackboard writing is not only a display of subject content, but also a display of the teacher's teaching art.". Teaching people how to fish is better than teaching them how to fish. Many teachers and students have benefited from Hu Ying's teachings, learned scientific methodologies from him, and obtained the key to learning new knowledge.
Returning to the laboratory, he was once again a down-to-earth scientist. As Academician Hu Ying said, "Scientific research requires climbing and cannot be achieved by taking ordinary paths. We must not be impatient or focus solely on short-term interests while neglecting the national and national interests."
In 2008, Academician Hu Ying said at the "Education Merit" award ceremony in Shanghai, "Chemistry has made tremendous contributions to human material civilization, and China in the 21st century still needs a large number of excellent chemistry talents. I am willing to continue to contribute my humble efforts to China's chemistry education." These words expressed Academician Hu Ying's loyalty to education and high expectations for the chemistry profession, and deeply inspired every teacher and student of Huali.
It is worth mentioning that Hu Ying was awarded the most recent national advanced title the year before last, that is, the first "exemplary individual of national textbook construction" in 2021. He edited the textbook "Physical Chemistry" and "Physical Chemistry Reference", and pioneered the new framework of physical chemistry; The teaching philosophy of "less but more refined and more knowledgeable" has been proposed, which has trained a large number of experts in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering for the country. Has won multiple awards, including 2 National Teaching Achievement Awards, Baosteel Excellent Teacher Special Award, 4 Shanghai Teaching Achievement Awards, and 2 National Excellent Textbook Awards.
It is reported that the farewell ceremony for Academician Hu Ying's body is scheduled to be held on September 2, 2023 at 10:00 am in the lobby of Shanghai Longhua Funeral Home.
Salute to Academician Hu Ying!
[Biography of Academicians]
I studied at Shangqun Primary School and Zongwen Primary School in Shanghai from 1938 to 1944

Hu Ying's father, Hu Yuanteng, graduated from Shanghai University of Law and Politics and worked as a lawyer. However, due to strong national consciousness, he was unwilling to work under the Japanese puppet rule and was actually unemployed. During the Anti Japanese War, family life was extremely difficult, and young Hu Ying was forced to work with her family to make a living at an early age.
In 1944, he was admitted to Huxin Middle School
Thanks to the student loan, Hu Yingcai was able to continue his education. Huxin Middle School has classes in the afternoon, and in the morning, Hu Ying sells scallions and ginger in the market to earn some money to support her family. This period of life had a great impact on his life. The disasters of the nation and the difficulties of his family have cultivated his perseverance and perseverance.
Graduated from Shanghai Middle School in 1950
After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, he transferred to Shanghai Middle School. Influenced by his sister and brother-in-law's work in spice synthesis, he developed a strong interest in chemistry, which also laid the groundwork for his entry into the field of chemistry.
Graduated from the Department of Chemical Machinery at East China University of Chemical Technology in 1953 and stayed on as a teacher in the same year
In 1950, Hu Ying was admitted to the Department of Chemical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and in 1952, the department was adjusted to East China University of Chemical Technology. After graduation, he stayed on campus to teach and engaged in teaching physical chemistry courses. In the 1970s, he often led students to go deep into factory internships and began to engage in research on fluid phase equilibrium and molecular thermodynamics to solve the separation of complex material systems in factories.
Appointed as a professor in 1982
In 1982, he went to the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley for further studies
In 1982, Hu Ying was sent to the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley for further studies, under the guidance of Prousnitz, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the founder of molecular thermodynamics. From then on, the two began their nearly thirty year cooperation and friendship.
When recalling the story between Hu Ying and Prousnitz, he said, "When I met with Prousnitz, I talked about my ideas. He said it was outdated and I was under immense pressure. Later, he used his brain and realized that scientific research is all about the unknown. After conducting a firepower reconnaissance, the location of the bunker became apparent. This gave me an inspiration to grasp something practical. After conducting a firepower reconnaissance, the contradiction indeed arose. Once I found it, the problem was solved easily."

The cooperation with Prousnez not only opened up a broad field for Hu Ying to conduct scientific research, but also quickly brought his research to the forefront of the international community.
Appointed as a doctoral supervisor in 1986
In 1993, he was elected as an academician of the CAS Member
