The Jiefang Daily Shangguan News reporter learned that Academician Hu Ying was born on June 19, 1934 in Shanghai, with ancestral roots in Yingshan County, Hubei Province. He joined the CPC in 1953, graduated from the Department of Chemical Machinery of East China Institute of Chemical Technology in the same year and stayed at the school. He has successively served as assistant, lecturer, associate professor and professor of the Department of Chemistry. In 1993, he was elected as an academician of the CAS Member.

As a great master in the field of chemical engineering and physical chemistry in China, Academician Hu Ying has served as the Director of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Engineering Chemistry under the Ministry of Education, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Chemical Society, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Chemical Society, and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Chemical Engineering, Journal of Chemistry, and Fluid Phase Equilibria. In 1985, he was awarded the title of model worker of Shanghai, the title of young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions in 1986, and the title of Shanghai education hero in 2008.

For a full 70 years of teaching at school, he stepped onto the three foot podium and became a truly outstanding teacher.
