The phenomenon of unequal communication has become more prominent, and the latest "Global Mainstream Media Network Communication Power Research Report" has been released. Research Institute | Global | Global Mainstream Media Network Communication Power Research Report
Recently, the School of Journalism at Fudan University and the Global Communication and All Media Research Institute at Fudan University released a research report on the network communication power of global mainstream media. This report summarizes various communication data from mainstream global media, analyzes the current international network communication pattern and information flow mode, and provides guidance and support for China's media to further improve their communication efficiency on international network platforms.
The report shows that mainstream media in China are actively operating and speaking out on various international online platforms, and international communication work has achieved significant results. The overall dissemination effect of Chinese media on Facebook platform is better than that on Twitter platform. Among them, China Global Television Network, People's Daily, China Daily, Global Times, Xinhua News Agency and other Chinese media accounts rank high, especially China Global Television Network ranks in the top 10 on the comprehensive list. On the Twitter platform, the exposure and diffusion of Chinese media have also shown good performance.
The report also shows that the phenomenon of unequal global media communication is more prominent. Specifically, the communication effectiveness and network structure indicators of mainstream global media exhibit obvious power-law distribution characteristics. Not only that, it also exhibits a prominent "Matthew effect" in the process of media communication - there is a significant difference in the distribution of data between the total amount and mean of global media communication, with the former having a more concentrated power-law distribution than the latter, even exceeding the threshold of the 28/20 law. The above indicators all reveal that the inequality phenomenon in the total dissemination effect is becoming increasingly serious.
The Global Mainstream Media Network Communication Power Research Report was completed by a team organized by the Global Communication All Media Research Institute of Fudan University. The project team has planned a media sampling plan based on the level of national development. A total of 222 mainstream media from 33 countries were selected, and the dissemination data of content posted by these media on their verified Twitter and Facebook accounts throughout 2022 were collected. The project team has also designed a set of influence evaluation indicators for global mainstream media, to examine the media's communication effects in four levels: exposure, interaction, diffusion, and recognition in the process of information dissemination, achieving multi-level and multi-dimensional communication effects and influence ranking.
It is reported that the Global Communication and All Media Research Institute of Fudan University is a newly established research institution at Fudan University in recent years. Its aim is to focus on news communication practice, international and future oriented, focusing on "major theoretical difficulties, major practical challenges, and major social concerns", and to build an interdisciplinary and open research center and think tank platform.
