Xigui, also known as single footed Angelica or wild Angelica, is a medicinal and edible herb with a thousand year history of inheritance among the Bai ethnic group in Yunnan. Can it provide anti-aging and skincare services in the context of modern beauty and maintenance needs?

This summer, the "Yun Gui Zhi Chu" social practice team from the School of Pharmacy of East China University of Science and Technology visited Kunming, Wenshan, Dali and other places to search for good remedies, explore the medicinal and edible value of this local traditional medicinal herb in Yunnan, and use industry university research cooperation and east-west cooperation to help rural revitalization.

The western genus belongs to Umbelliferae, and is a perennial herb. It is mainly distributed in Yunnan, Xizang, western Sichuan and other places. It is artificially cultivated in northwest Yunnan, such as Dali, Yunnan. Its dry roots are thick, yellow brown on the surface, and ringed on the top. In the view of traditional Chinese medicine, Xigui has a warm nature, a spicy, sweet, and slightly bitter taste, and has the effects of dispelling wind and dampness, dispelling cold and relieving pain, strengthening the spleen and stomach, nourishing blood and qi, and so on.

The core members of this "Cloud Returning Knowledge" social practice team come from Professor Jian Li's research group at East China University of Science and Technology. The team has found in previous research that Xigui has antioxidant and anti-aging effects on the skin. Multidimensional laboratory studies have shown that Xigui can completely restore the low cell proliferation caused by drug-induced skin aging, improve drug-induced skin aging by up to 30%, and overall delay aging by up to 15%. It is reported that patents related to the use of Xigui in skincare are about to be granted, which has broadened the application path and provided scientific verification for the development of medicine, food, and cosmetics products with Xigui as the core.

The scientific research achievements still need to be transformed into practical productivity. The "Cloud Returning Knowledge Office" team went to Dali University to "learn from" and gain a deep understanding of the local scale of Xigui cultivation, industrial development, and policy support. Project supervisor Hu Zelan stated that Professor Li Jian has visited Yunnan multiple times for on-site research, and the social practice team will accelerate the promotion of scientific research projects, promote the development of the Western Returned Industry, and prepare for the release of local food safety standards in Yunnan Province. Xia Conglong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Pharmacy at Dali University, stated that the visits and research of the students have played a supportive role in the development of the Xigui industry, and they are very willing to actively cooperate and continue to promote the merger.

In Machang Village, Heqing County, Dali Prefecture, the secret of Xigui, which has been hidden deep in the mountains for decades, is being discovered. In the mountains and forests, the practice team squatted in the fields, sitting on the ground, conducting investigations on the growth environment, planting area, and supply and sales situation of Xigui, and exchanging views with local farmers on the industrialization of Xigui. "When Xigui completed the transformation from plants to products on the red soil, I also saw the dazzling light of the millennium old treasure after it was polished by us." Member Peng Shiyu said, "The development of traditional Chinese medicine requires us to adhere to integrity and innovation, unleash our disciplinary expertise and creative abilities, and walk a new path of rural revitalization that achieves a win-win situation between the development of traditional Chinese medicine and the prosperity of farmers."

Based on this, the team has written a report on the current situation and suggestions for the development of the Xigui industry in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Dong Wenhuang, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Bureau of Dali Prefecture, stated that Dali urgently needs products like Xigui to transform into the technology industry and drive local economic development. "I hope that the School of Pharmacy at Dali University can actively connect with each other, further complement each other's strengths, and achieve industrialization of 'returning to the West' as soon as possible. This can effectively consolidate and expand the achievements of poverty alleviation and effectively connect with rural revitalization."

Yunnan's hundred herbs are treasures. How can we learn from the stones of other mountains and make traditional Chinese medicine grow from a single seedling to a single chain? At the Key Laboratory of Sustainable Utilization of Panax notoginseng Resources in Yunnan Province, Kunming University of Technology, the practice team learned and visited, from cultivation, irrigation, environmental protection and intelligent management in the planting process, to processing and testing, and finally to the display and display of some listed products, to intuitively understand the fine research and design of the Panax notoginseng industry chain. At Wenshan Pharmaceutical Company, the practice team also learned that the local area focuses on the entire industry chain of Panax notoginseng, leveraging its advantages in brand, operation, technology, and funding to develop it from a traditional "relying on the weather" to a digital and technological "gun to gun" approach. This also provides a reference model for standardized planting, digital management, and industrial implementation of Panax notoginseng in the future.
