The obituary states that China's biological community has suffered significant losses, and a 56 year old professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University unfortunately suffered a major traffic accident
Today, the homepage of the School of Life Science and Technology of Shanghai Jiaotong University turned black and white, and an obituary was issued: Zhang Dabing, a member of the CPC, a famous botanist, a winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and a chair professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University, was involved in a major traffic accident on June 22, and died at the age of 56.
Jiefang Daily's Shangguan News reporter learned that Zhang Dabing, as the first author, has won two first prizes for scientific and technological progress in Shanghai, as well as honors such as the "Shanghai Natural Science Peony Award" and "Shanghai Excellent Discipline Leader". He was a globally highly cited author from 2016 to 2017 and a highly cited author in China from 2016 to 2018.

Zhang Dabing received his master's degree in botany from Nanjing University in 1994 and his doctor's degree in molecular genetics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology in 1998. From 1998 to 2005, served as the director, assistant researcher, associate researcher, and researcher of the Plant Molecular Biology Laboratory at the Biotechnology Research Center of the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences. From 2005 to 2018, served as the Vice Dean of the School of Life Science and Technology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Professor Zhang Dabing has long been engaged in research on plant reproductive development and biosafety, and is a renowned leader in the field of developmental biology in China. Its main projects include the National Natural Science Foundation of China's general project "Research on the Molecular Mechanism of CSA Regulating Rice Photosensitive Fertility Conversion", the international cooperation and exchange project "Research on the Main Lipid Metabolism and Gene Regulation Network in Rice and Arabidopsis Anther Development", the Ministry of Science and Technology's Key R&D Program "Mechanism of Crop Male Sterility and New Male Sterile Lines", and the major genetically modified project "Molecular Feature Recognition Technology of Transgenic Organisms".

One of its research directions is the molecular characteristics of genetically modified organisms. Currently, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) safety has become a global research topic of concern. Zhang Dabing's team mainly uses genomics, metabolomics and other methods to systematically carry out innovative research on molecular feature detection and recognition technology, develop new theories, methods, and standards for GMOs molecular feature analysis, and provide important technical support for China's agricultural GMOs safety management and agricultural product trade.
The hospital's obituary stated that "his unfortunate passing is a significant loss for Shanghai Jiao Tong University and also for the biological community in China." After the accident, Professor Zhang Dabing's family was deeply saddened. According to the agreement, his funeral will be handled in a simplified manner nearby, and related commemorative activities will be held separately in his hometown and unit. Before his death, Zhang Dabing served as a mentor and taught more than ten students who were currently pursuing master's and doctoral degrees.
