But to eat squid, one usually needs to go to fishing sites off the coast of Peru and Argentina in the southern hemisphere, and use unique "squid fishing" techniques to transport the caught squid back.

So, who is the country with the largest squid production in the world? Undoubtedly, it is China, and this "fish" has opened up a billion dollar industrial chain. On July 6th, the 2022 China Ocean Squid Fishing Industry Development Report was released at the 2023 Zhoushan China Squid Industry Conference, marking the first time China has released a report on the development of the ocean squid fishing industry.

The 2022 China Ocean Squid Fishing Industry Development Report was jointly compiled by 7 participating units and lasted for more than 5 months. According to the "Opinions on Promoting the High quality Development of Ocean going Fisheries during the 14th Five Year Plan", under the guidance of the Fisheries and Fisheries Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the China Ocean going Fisheries Association and Shanghai Ocean University, as well as the Zhejiang Province Ocean going Fisheries Association, Shandong Province Ocean going Fisheries Association, Fujian Province Ocean going Fisheries Development Promotion Association, Guangdong Province Ocean going Fisheries Association, and Zhoushan City Ocean going Fisheries Association, jointly wrote the "China Ocean going Squid Industry Development Report". The report is over 13000 words long, including 8 parts: industrial scale, offshore squid fishing, offshore squid processing, squid market trade, industrial promotion, international fisheries governance and compliance, offshore squid fishing management system and industry self-discipline, and prospects.

The Jiefang Daily Shangguan News reporter learned that after more than 30 years of development, China's deep-sea squid fishing industry has ranked first in the world in annual squid production for more than 10 consecutive years. In 1989, under the leadership of Wang Yaogeng and a group of pioneers in deep-sea squid fishing at Shanghai Ocean University, the "Puling" was sent for the first time to explore the Pacific pleated squid fishing grounds and conduct experiments on light induced squid fishing technology in the Sea of Japan, and achieved success, achieving a breakthrough in China's deep-sea squid fishing industry. Therefore, Wang Yaogeng is also known as the "father of Chinese squid fishing".

Through the efforts of several generations of "Squid Professors" at Shanghai Ocean University, and based on the foundation laid by their predecessors, Professor Chen Xinjun's team has made further efforts to develop new technologies for the discovery and resource recognition of oceanic squid fishing grounds, and has discovered four new squid fishing grounds worldwide. In order to provide information support for timely arrival and precise fishing of squid fishing vessels, the Chen Xinjun team also completed a 30-year squid resource survey distribution map in 9 global sea areas, created a squid habitat model, and predicted the distribution of squid resources. They independently developed a near real-time forecasting system for squid fishing, with an accuracy rate generally exceeding 80%. Therefore, Chen Xinjun himself is also jokingly referred to as the "squid giant" in the industry.

After more than 30 years of efforts, China's deep-sea squid fishing industry has expanded from a single fishing ground in the Sea of Japan to sea areas such as the Northwest Pacific, Middle East Pacific, Southeast Pacific, Southwest Atlantic, and Northwest Indian Ocean, and its industrial scale has jumped to the forefront of the world. Since 2020, China has implemented autonomous fishing bans in some high seas of the Middle East Pacific and Southwest Atlantic, and added new high seas of the Northwest Indian Ocean in 2022, practicing the concept of a "community with a shared future for the ocean" and scientifically conserving and sustainably utilizing squid resources in the high seas.

On that day, the People's Government of Zhoushan City also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shanghai Ocean University on the industry, academia, and research of deep-sea fisheries. At the same time, Wan Rong, President of Shanghai Ocean University, and Chen Jian, Chairman of China Fisheries Zhoushan Marine Fisheries Co., Ltd., unveiled the plaque for the Zhejiang Zhoushan Squid Technology Academy.

Last year, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the China Association for Science and Technology released a list of "supporting the construction of science and technology academies". Shanghai Ocean University's Squid Science and Technology Academy, located in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, became the only science and technology academy selected in China's ocean fishing industry. On the basis of the early stage, the Squid Technology Academy has trained 10 undergraduate and 10 master's students, of which 2 are employed in Zhoushan. They have provided fishing technology guidance, compliance guidance, and enterprise management guidance to local enterprises more than 30 times.

It is reported that the Science and Technology Academy will further consolidate and deepen the talent cultivation model of ocean fishing that integrates politics, industry, education, and research based on the long-term cooperation between Haidian University and Zhoushan National Ocean Fishing Base in scientific research and talent cultivation. It will promote the combination of graduate education with ocean squid fishing production practice, the promotion and application of ocean squid fishing technology achievements, and the improvement and efficiency of the ocean squid fishing industry, providing talent support for the modernization and healthy development of China's ocean squid fishing industry.
