This summer, the "Seeking and Inheriting the Spirit of Third Line Construction" summer practice team of Shanghai Institute of Electrical Engineering departed from Shanghai on July 15th, crossing 11 provinces and cities in northwest, southwest, northeast, north China, and central China in a "special forces style". They visited 36 third line builders of the same age as the Republic, and conducted on-site inspections and visits to 17 equipment manufacturing enterprises established and grown from the 20th century's third line construction period.

The construction of the third line was a large-scale national strategy in China from the 1960s to the 1970s, during which many touching figures and deeds emerged. Over the past 70 years since its establishment, Shanghai Institute of Electrical Engineering has provided over 100000 outstanding graduates for the development of national industrial construction and equipment manufacturing industry. As a national demonstration team for the rural revitalization "Duxing Plan" special action of the "Three Down to the Countryside" social practice activity for college and vocational students this year, this summer practice team visited alumni, inspected third line construction enterprises, excavated and organized the stories of graduates from Shanghai Institute of Electrical Engineering in China's equipment manufacturing industry during the third line construction period, measured the contributions of third line builders to industrial development, and felt the changes brought by industrial development to regional economy, society, and people's lives with their feet.

"Flowing water does not compete for the first, what we need is endless flow." At Pinggao Group in Henan Province, Liu Gengen, a 64 year old alumnus, left a deep impression on his classmates with his persistence. During his studies at Shanghai Institute of Electrical Engineering, Liu Gengen was enthusiastic about hands-on practice. After entering Pinggao Electric, he became deeply rooted in frontline engineering and technology. From 68 years of work to 2023, at the age of 74, Liu Gengen remained steadfast in the forefront of technology. It is this sixty year perseverance that has made his journey beautiful. This experience also made Liu Shengdian, a student of the Electrical 2114 class, ponder: "In today's fast-paced life, has the pursuit of speed and efficiency truly solved our problems? I think sometimes what we lack is the" slowness "of alumni. This" slowness "does not refer to procrastination and low efficiency, but to anchoring goals and sticking to the green mountains without relaxation." Seeking information is sometimes a "special interview". During conversations and interactions, companies send job invitations to Liu Shengdian of the Electrical 2114 class on the spot, and some human resources managers add Liu Shengdian's WeChat and say: send his resume directly to him after graduation.

In Shiyan, Hubei, a city built due to the construction of the third line, it was once known as "Shiyan is the Shiyan of Second Automobile Works". Yin Xinquan from Shanghai introduced, "When we first graduated and arrived here, Shiyan was just a town with only one muddy road. Back then, the slogan was to start production and then live. We worked hard, built factories, and lived in reed mats." Yin Xinquan's two children later stayed in Shiyan to work. In Guilin, the former Guilin Power Capacitor Factory was the first independently designed and built power capacitor factory in China. Accompanied by several old alumni such as Lu Meizhen, members of the practical team saw a production workshop hidden in a cave at the foot of Guilin's Pingfeng Mountain.

As a student of Electrical Engineering and Automation, Hu Xinyi from Class 2112 of Electrical Engineering said, "This visit made me realize that my major is a complex and vast discipline, and the combination of theory and practice can fully utilize my professional skills. The knowledge I have learned is far from enough, and to catch up with the pace of electrical development, I need to reserve a lot of professional knowledge and unremitting efforts." Deep in the mountains, alumni demonstrate through practical actions that continuous learning, persistent efforts, enough patience and focus can create their own brilliance.

In Pingdingshan, Henan, Liu Gengen and 16 others responded to the call for the construction of the third line. In 1972, they voluntarily signed up in Shenyang to go to Henan to assist in the construction of Pingdingshan High Voltage Switchgear Factory. "Back then, this place was all a wheat field. We didn't wait, relied on it, and relied entirely on ourselves. We started building the factory and produced high-voltage isolation switches the same year we built it. In 1991, our independently developed sulfur hexafluoride circuit breaker quickly caused a nationwide sensation, and Pinggao Electric won the only national quality gold award in the high-voltage switch industry." In Chongqing, the practice team met several old alumni such as Zhao Peiming at Cummins High Power Engine Factory. This is an old factory established during the third tier construction period, which is on the brink of bankruptcy and bankruptcy in the early 21st century. Zhao Peiming, who was then the Party Secretary of the factory, was appointed as the Chairman of the company in the face of danger, ultimately leading the company to turn losses into profits; Today, Cummins has an annual profit of 500-60 million yuan and has become a giant and leader in the engine industry.

Seeing the growth in change has also allowed members of the practice team to gain their own growth. "With the efforts of alumni in the construction of the third tier, factories have risen and grown, achieving a transformation from 0 to 1, continuing to develop, and finally becoming the leaders of the entire industry. Most of these enterprises in the construction of the third tier are located in remote areas backed by mountains. With the influx of fresh blood from all over the country, the development of large and small third tier enterprises has also driven the prosperity and growth of the entire city. Enterprises such as Dongfeng Group, Dongfang Electric, and Pinggao Group have become industry leaders, breaking through foreign technological blockades and leading the entire industry to development. This is the growth of the industry," said Wang Xiuyu in the electrical category 2213. The visiting team members also felt the infection of the spirit of the third line from the bricks and tiles of the third line factories and every sentence of the third line builders, and gained our own growth.
