On average, there is one activity per day, and Fudan University's "Cultural Calendar" appears, making Fudan people "outstanding and interesting"
"The culture of a university, just like sunshine, air, and soil determine the growth of all things, directly affects the learning and growth of students, as well as the academic interests and campus life of teachers and students. The school calendar is the rhythm and rhythm of the campus." On the afternoon of August 31, Qiu Xin, Secretary of the Party Committee of Fudan University, gave the first ideological and political class for 2023 undergraduate freshmen, introducing the first appearance of Fudan's "Cultural Calendar".
This "Cultural Calendar" uses the school calendar as a carrier to select nearly 400 academic and cultural activities on Fudan campus in the next year. It is arranged monthly, with themes and seasonal characteristics each month, presenting a panoramic view of Fudan as a fertile land for education, academia, and culture.
"People refer to immersive virtual spaces as the 'metaverse', and opening this booklet feels like opening up a 'Fudan universe'. We hope that everyone can make good use of the 'cultural calendar' in the next four years, fully understand and cultivate the 'outstanding and interesting' characteristics of Fudan people." Qiu Xin said.
Focusing on cultivating the spiritual traits of Fudan people
The cultural school calendar originated from academic and cultural school celebrations.
On the occasion of Fudan University's 118th anniversary celebration in May this year, the university took turns presenting 31 academic presentations. With such high frequency and intensity, teachers and students have received enthusiastic responses. University anniversary should be an academic and cultural anniversary. Can this practice be normalized and institutionalized?
Based on this thinking, the school party committee has decided to launch the construction of the "Cultural School Calendar", making it a demonstrative and leading project of the "New Era Soul Casting Project" for Fudan version, focusing on cultivating the spiritual characteristics of Fudan people, and cultivating a fertile land for education, academia, and culture.
The well-known "teaching calendar" for teachers and students focuses on educating students, ensuring the daily operation of school teaching, while the "cultural calendar" focuses on casting souls, both of which embody the spirit of Fudan University.
Chen Yugang, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Minister of the Propaganda Department of Fudan University, introduced that through the construction of the cultural school calendar, we hope to enable teachers, students, and alumni to "encounter an academic report, a cultural and sports activity, a club activity, and a high-level exhibition on campus every day." We hope to make the exciting and student-centered campus cultural activities a collective memory that connects Fudan people, so that every Fudan student can receive subtle and immersive education in the "excellent and interesting" university culture, and enable every Fudan student to achieve a better version of themselves in this fertile land.
We will introduce a "horse racing mechanism" for dynamic adjustment
Under the azure sky, the watercolor hand-painted "Xianghui Hall" stands solemnly, which is the cover of the first volume of "Cultural Calendar". "Xianghui Hall is a symbol of the century old Fudan culture and a spiritual home for Fudan people. The blue sky symbolizes the academic and cultural sky," said Zhang Xiaoqing, Deputy Minister of the Propaganda Department of the Fudan University Party Committee.
Opening the "Cultural Calendar", during the September welcome season, the "Monthly Recommendations" section includes both open applications for undergraduate academic research funding programs such as the "Wangdao Project" and the "Hundred Regiments Battle" student club recruitment activity; The "Bioecology Discipline Week" on September 2nd will kick off the highlight of the "Cultural Calendar" and the "Discipline Week"; Zhongshan Hospital Student Cultural and Art Activity Month, National University Astronomical Photography Competition Exhibition opens... A dazzling array of works, overwhelming.
"If we use the 'three primary colors' to describe it, the' cultural school calendar 'consists of three aspects of cultural activities: the century old inheritance of red gene culture, rich campus cultural activities, academic and disciplinary culture." Chen Yugang introduced that nearly 400 activities were included in the' cultural school calendar ', with an average of more than one activity per day.
The "Cultural Calendar" focuses on reflecting the educational orientation, national consciousness, humanistic sentiment, scientific spirit, professional competence, and international perspective, and will be integrated into the activities.
It is reported that this is the first time that Fudan University has integrated cultural activities in the form of a school calendar. It is the first time that a "cultural school calendar" has been used to inform all teachers and students, and for the first time, all disciplines have showcased their culture through a "subject week", demonstrating the advantages of a comprehensive university.
The "cultural school calendar" is not static and will introduce a "horse racing mechanism" to dynamically adjust according to the quality of activities in that year. The current version 1.0 is presented as a paper manual, and a "Cultural Calendar" column will be built on the campus network to update and supplement information on major academic and cultural activities in a timely manner. Interactive functions such as subscription push and registration participation will be further planned, making the user experience stronger and more convenient to use. There will be versions 2.0, 3.0, and more in the future.
"I believe that students will also be moved like me"
"I am particularly moved and excited. This' Cultural Calendar 'is something I have been looking forward to since I graduated from Fudan University in 1996. Fudan University has so many activities and campus life is so exciting." Professor Li Hui from the School of Life Sciences at Fudan University said that from the layout of the' Cultural Calendar ', regardless of the level of activities, even small activities organized by students are put together. "I believe that when this booklet is distributed to students, they will also be moved like me."
Yang Yang, a direct doctoral student in the Chemistry Department of the 2023 cohort, returned to school to continue her studies after just one year of teaching support in Yushu, Qinghai. Currently, she serves as the head of the school's Youth League Committee and Community Service Center. "A total of 84 club activities were selected for the 'Cultural Calendar' this time, and I didn't know there were so many interesting club activities before." Yang Yang said that as a Fudan student, one should think about how to take on social responsibility, and clubs provide such practical opportunities.
"The 'Cultural Calendar' has been refreshing to me. I can learn about activities held by other secondary colleges, and when encountering activities related to my research direction, I can participate. This can greatly broaden my horizons and broaden my research ideas." Sha Yiou, a 2023 doctoral student at the School of Basic Medicine, said that tolerance and openness have always been the academic and cultural temperament of Fudan University. The school encourages undergraduate students to join the laboratory to carry out scientific research work and opens up research projects such as' Wangdao 'and' Zhengyi 'for students to choose from. "I am very fortunate to have been working in the laboratory since my third year of undergraduate studies, and it has been four years since then, and I have been doing it ever since."
