Professor Zhang Wenhong, director of the National Medical Center for Infectious Diseases and director of the Infection Department of Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, and other experts made speeches and exchanges. Zhang Wenhong said that research shows that the symptoms of "Changxinguan" will decline over time, and the heterogeneity of the disease is strong. Jiang Shibo, professor of the School of Basic Medicine of Fudan University and director of the Institute of Pathogenic Microorganisms, said that we should be alert to the recombination of COVID-19 Omikron mutant and MERS virus, and accelerate the development of broad-spectrum vaccines.
Zhang Wenhong introduced that the R0 value of the Omicron family is as high as 20-22. The so-called R0 value refers to the average number of people a patient can infect in an environment that is entirely susceptible to infection without intervention. Before the birth of Omicron, the most contagious virus in human history was measles, with an R0 value of 18. "The R0 value of Omicron is so high that it may have reached the limit of virus evolution." Zhang Wenhong speculates, "If it exceeds this value, it may violate the biological laws of carbon based life."

At the end of last year and the beginning of this year, it is estimated that more than 80% of the residents were infected with COVID-19 during the pandemic in China, resulting in cross immunization and the construction of an immune barrier. At that time, Zhang Wenhong predicted that a second wave of the epidemic would occur from May to June this year. "I speak a lot among clinical doctors, but fortunately this prediction is not wrong, otherwise I would definitely be 'beaten' by someone," he laughed at the seminar. The reason for making this prediction is twofold: firstly, after infection at the end of last year or the beginning of this year, antibodies will gradually decline in the next 4-6 months; Second, in the first wave of the epidemic, nearly 20% of the people were not infected with COVID-19, belonging to the susceptible population.
Fortunately, in the second wave of the epidemic, most people's "second positive" symptoms were milder than their "first positive" symptoms. In this regard, Zhang Wenhong explained that he cooperated with the scientific researchers of the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Molecular Cell Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and found that the people infected with COVID-19 still had memory T cells and memory B cells after the antibody dropped to a very low level. When COVID-19 virus invaded again, they would fight against the virus with their "memory".
Do researchers want to study the issue of "growing new crowns"? Zhang Wenhong thinks it's too early to let the bullet fly for a while longer. Recently, he led his team to publish a paper in an international academic journal, publishing the observation data of tens of thousands of infected people in China for more than one year. Research shows that most symptoms of infected people will disappear over time, and the heterogeneity of "Changxinguan" is very strong, that is, the etiology is not clear, and the pathogenesis is different. Some people said that their symptoms of "growing new crowns" were serious, but after examination, they found that there were no clinical indicators corresponding to the symptoms.
Based on this, Zhang Wenhong believes that the medical community has not yet formed a unified scientific concept of "Changxin Crown", and has not yet found a unified feature and mark, so it is not recommended that scientific researchers start research on it immediately.
When it comes to future emerging infectious diseases, Jiang Shibo expressed that the biggest concern is the possibility of new coronavirus recombinant strains, such as the Omicron and MERS coronavirus recombinant strains, as several cases of simultaneous infection with both MERS coronavirus and Omicron have been reported in the Middle East region. "Because MERS coronavirus has a high mortality rate, although its transmission power is very weak, the mortality rate reaches 35%, while COVID-19, especially Omicron, has a very low mortality rate, about a few thousandths, but its transmission rate is very high. If there is recombination, there is the possibility of 'strong combination'."

Don't think that the COVID-19 has subsided and there is no need to research and develop related vaccines. Zhang Wenhong agreed with this view: "Up to now, the variation of COVID-19 is the gene drift in the RBD region, and there is no viral genome hybridization, which is very lucky. We need to do a good job in the research and monitoring of the viral genome."
