Establishing cutting-edge laboratories such as sleep dreams and anti-aging, Chen Tianqiao invested 1 billion yuan to promote the AI+neuroscience community | AI | Dreams
"The digital life depicted in science fiction is desirable, and I believe that only AI+brain science can create a real and soulful digital life." Chen Tianqiao, a former Internet tycoon who continues to layout in the field of AI+brain science, once again invested about 1 billion yuan in this field.
On July 6th, at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference "Brain Computer Intelligence Digital Life" themed forum held in Shanghai, Professor Gerwin Schalk, Director of the Frontier Laboratory of Applied Neurotechnology at the Tianqiao Brain Science Research Institute, announced the above plan on behalf of the institute.
Global recruitment of two directors, sharing $100 million
The working principles of the brain and AI are two black boxes that plague the scientific community. Brain science is currently one of the most complex and challenging research fields for humans, and the operation of artificial intelligence also faces problems such as process opacity and uncontrollability. In response, TCCI announced the construction of an upgraded cutting-edge laboratory, MindX, to recruit two top scientists from the global AI and neuroscience communities as directors, sharing $100 million in research funding.
According to the concept of Mind X Laboratory, the two directors will come from the neuroscience and AI science communities respectively, leading a team to work closely together. On the one hand, they will combine in-depth research on the human brain in areas such as learning, memory, cognition, and emotion to promote the further development of artificial intelligence; On the other hand, utilizing next-generation AI technology to uncover the essence of the brain.
The AI scientist team plans to expand to 200 members
How to deeply integrate AI with neuroscience research? TCCI proposes three key steps: targeting public demand, data collection, and model training, to create a new research paradigm and ensure that AI truly helps scientists achieve breakthrough innovation in the field of neuroscience.
At the level of public demand, TCCI focuses on key areas such as mental health, sleep, and neurodegenerative diseases. In 2020 and 2021, it successively established the Frontier Laboratory of Applied Neurotechnology and the Frontier Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Mental Health. At present, TCCI is actively seeking institutional partners to establish cutting-edge laboratories for artificial intelligence and sleep dreams, as well as cutting-edge laboratories for artificial intelligence and anti-aging, and providing a start-up funding of 50 million RMB for each laboratory, with no ceiling on sustainable investment.
At the data level, TCCI actively cooperates with hospitals to provide financial support and technical services in data standardization, analysis, and other aspects while ensuring safety and compliance. At the same time, it develops new data collection technology tools to provide richer dynamic clinical data for the field of neuroscience.
It is reported that the performance of the flexible invasive electrodes incubated by TCCI's cutting-edge laboratory of applied neural technology is at the leading level in China, leading Neuralink in clinical trials and achieving significant phased results. The household products under research integrate key data such as EEG, heart rate, and blood oxygen, not only optimizing signal accuracy to medical level, but also introducing music regulation function to form a closed-loop interaction for monitoring and intervention. In addition, significant achievements have been made in areas such as eye movement monitoring, game cognitive exercise, and VR game therapy for cognitive impairment. In the future, the laboratory plans to collect data and signals from more dimensions of the human body, preparing for the construction of a true "digital life" in the future.
At the model training level, TCCI has been recruiting outstanding talents in computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, or related fields worldwide since May this year, especially experts with experience in large language models and natural language processing. Currently, a team of 30 AI scientists has been established, and plans to expand to 200 in the future.
