Ma Xu, born on the banks of the Songhua River in Northeast China, joined the People's Liberation Army at the age of less than 15 and became a medical worker. Afterwards, she followed the troops on a southern and northern expedition, saving lives and helping the wounded. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, she entered the Military Medical University for further studies and was later assigned to the former Wuhan Military Region General Hospital.

In 1961, the 15th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was reorganized into an airborne army. Military doctor Ma Xu volunteered to apply for medical support for parachuting training in airborne troops. "I have to be like the army. In this way, Ma Xu became the first female paratrooper in China. She was once in the same unit as the battle hero Huang Jiguang, and participated in the Liberation War and the Korean War, during which she made multiple contributions and received honors.

During his time in the parachuting unit, Ma Xu discovered that the ankles of the paratroopers were often injured. He and his husband devoted themselves to scientific research and developed an "inflatable ankle protector" through research and personal parachuting practice. This product was promoted in the airborne unit and obtained a national patent. The two have also published multiple medical papers.

During a high-altitude airborne training, Ma Xu discovered that the soldiers had symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, and slow movement caused by hypoxia. However, traditional oxygen pillows and supply bottles were either too large and heavy, or were prone to explosions when encountering shrapnel. Ma Xu immediately decided to invent a lightweight and safe product to safeguard the safety of the soldiers.

Due to the fact that the usage scenario is in high-altitude areas, achieving uniform distribution of oxygen up and down has become the most difficult problem to overcome. The couple spent nearly a year just searching for suitable fabrics everywhere. "The drawings were drawn over 600 times, and it took hundreds of attempts to succeed," Ma Xu said with a smile. In the end, the "oxygen tank top" invented by her and her husband was granted a national patent, filling a gap in the field of paratrooper high-altitude parachuting.

In September 2018, Ma Xu and Yan Xueyong decided to donate their life savings of 10 million yuan to Mulan County for the development of their hometown's education. At that time, her best shoes were only worth 15 yuan.

On the day of the donation, two elderly people came to the bank wearing white camouflage clothes and wanted to send out all 10 million yuan. Due to the large amount, bank staff were worried that the two elderly people would be scammed and even reported to the police. It wasn't until the police arrived that I understood the intentions of the two elders.

Now, Ma Xu has taken out his long cherished treasures - invention patents, medals, combat boots, experience notes... and donated them to his "second hometown" Wuhan.
