The letter emphasizes that "the friendship between nations lies in mutual affinity between the people.". The foundation of the development of national relations lies in the people of both countries. I hope everyone can pass on and carry forward the story of Guling and the relationship between Guling, so that the friendship between the Chinese and American people can grow and thrive like a thousand year old willow tree on Guling.
Where is Guling? What kind of touching story does it have?
Located in the suburbs of Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, Guling boasts beautiful scenery and has been a natural summer resort since modern times.
At the beginning of the last century, American Milton Gardner came to China with his parents and spent 10 years of happy childhood in Guling. In 1911, the Gardner family moved back to the United States, but he always maintained Chinese dietary habits. His greatest wish was to return to his childhood Chinese homeland, but due to various reasons, he was unable to fulfill his wish. Before his death, he kept muttering "Kuling, Kuling".
Mrs. Gardner didn't know where her husband's "Kuling" was. In order to fulfill her husband's wish, she made multiple visits to China, but all returned without knowing the exact location of Guling. Later, with the help of a Chinese student studying in the United States, Mrs. Gardner finally found out that her husband's hometown was Guling in Fuzhou, China.
In the spring of 1992, Xi Jinping, then secretary of the Fuzhou Municipal CPC Committee, read the tear-jerking story in the newspaper and immediately contacted Mrs. Gardner through the relevant departments and invited her to visit Guling.
In August of that year, Mrs. Gardner finally arrived in Fuzhou.
Mrs. Gardner excitedly said that her husband's last wish has finally been fulfilled, and the beautiful Guling and enthusiastic Chinese people have made me better understand why Gardner is so deeply attached to China.
From then on, the story of Guling spread among the people of China and the United States.
