From 5 to 6 June, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, state president, and chairman of the Central military Commission, inspected Bayannur City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous region. He presided over a forum on strengthening the comprehensive prevention and control of desertification and promoting the construction of key ecological projects such as the "three norths" and delivered an important speech.
On the morning of the 6th, Xi Jinping came to the state-run Xinhua Forest Farm in Linhe District of Bayannur City to learn about the construction of the "three north" shelterbelt system.
The "Three North" project spans 13 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government in northwest, north, and northeast China. It was launched in 1978 and is expected to be completed by 2050.
In the more than 40 years since the construction of the "Three North" project, the forest coverage rate in the project area has increased from 5.05% in 1977 to 13.84% in 2020. A green Great Wall has been built in northern Xinjiang, China to resist sandstorms, maintain soil and water, and promote agriculture and animal husbandry. It has achieved huge ecological, economic, and social benefits, becoming a successful example of global ecological governance.
