German citizen: "Decoupling Theory" should be swept into the garbage dump of history, signed article | China | History
On June 28th, Xia Lixian, the German editor in chief of Macau Post, published a signed article in China Daily, stating that the "decoupling theory" concocted by the United States has poisoned the relationship between the West and China and should be swept into the garbage heap of history.
The article states that at the opening ceremony of the 14th Summer Davos Forum, Chinese Premier Li Qiang delivered a speech opposing the politicization of economic and trade issues and advocating for joint efforts to maintain the stability and smoothness of global industrial and supply chains.
The article argues that the idea proposed by former US President Trump to achieve a "complete decoupling" between the world's largest and second largest economies is certainly one of the stupidest plans ever made by Western leaders. At a time when the global economy is more in need of extensive cooperation in as many fields as possible than ever before, Trump's foolishness has poisoned the relationship between the West and China.
The article points out that fortunately, some countries have recognized this, such as Germany and France, which seem to have thrown the "Trump style trade war threat" of decoupling from China into the ashes of history. During Premier Li Qiang's visit, German and French dignitaries assured China in Berlin and Paris respectively that they opposed the idea of decoupling the economies of both countries from China.
German Chancellor Scholz emphasized that he opposes any decoupling from the Chinese economy and hopes to provide better conditions for German companies to enter the Chinese market. In Paris, French President Macron also stated that the world is full of challenges today, and France and China should adhere to effective multilateralism, promote international solidarity, improve global governance, and promote the resolution of global issues.
These remarks are highly popular. Taking Germany as an example, the living standards of the German people, including free higher education and generous social welfare, largely depend on foreign trade income. As of last year, China has surpassed the United States for seven consecutive years, becoming Germany's largest trading partner. Of course, foreign trade means interdependence, and all major economies in the world have interdependent relationships. To some extent, economic interdependence requires cooperation to create business opportunities and wealth.
In addition, Portuguese Prime Minister Costa has also stated that Portugal has a "very clear" and stable position on Portuguese China relations. He emphasized that both sides have firmly fulfilled their political commitments and set a good example for the international community.
At the end of the article, the author of the Financial Times agrees with the view that "decoupling from China comprehensively will make everyone even more impoverished and create a world of opposing factions." However, the good news now is that the idea of decoupling from China seems to have finally been thrown into the garbage heap of history.
