Former Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Senate: The BRICS countries have attracted increasing attention from developing countries | BRICS | Foreign Affairs Committee
International Online Report: Vito Petrocelli, former Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Senate and Chairman of the BRICS Research Association, recently stated in an interview with reporters that the BRICS countries have attracted more and more attention from developing countries, and Italy should not easily give up its economic and trade relations with the BRICS countries.
Peter Rochelli said that the influence and contribution of the BRICS countries to the world economy have been increasing in recent years, and their importance is not inferior to that of longer established multilateral organizations. Calculated at purchasing power parity, the gross domestic product of the BRICS countries has surpassed that of the G7 in 2022. He emphasized that the purpose of the establishment of the BRICS countries is not to compete with the G7, but to safeguard the interests of developing countries. The development goal of the BRICS countries is to achieve common development through openness, transparency, unity and mutual assistance, rather than competition and confrontation.
Peter Rochelli said that in this context, more and more countries are applying to join the BRICS. The 15th meeting of BRICS leaders is about to be held, and discussions about the possibility of BRICS countries attracting new members are gradually heating up. Peter Rochelli pointed out that "expansion" means that the BRICS countries have the opportunity to transform from an emerging economic organization to a cooperative organization of developing countries. Nowadays, developing countries play an important role in global trade and economic development, and will also play an irreplaceable role in building a peaceful, developing, and stable global pattern in the future.
Regarding the question of whether the BRICS countries should break the dominance of the US dollar and establish a unified currency, Petrocelli stated that at least twenty countries have expressed interest in using a common currency to replace the US dollar in economic and trade activities. But he also pointed out that achieving this goal may take a long time.
When it comes to cooperation between Italy and the BRICS countries, Petrocelli pointed out that the United States' obstruction of Italy's role as a bridge between developed and developing countries is regrettable.
