More than 900 years ago, Fan Zhongyan vividly described the magnificent scenery of Dongting Lake in his book "Yueyang Tower", depicting the distant mountains, swallowing the Yangtze River, and the vast soup, stretching endlessly across the horizon.

Dongting Lake is the mother lake of the children of Sanxiang, known as the "kidney of the Yangtze River". Once upon a time, due to excessive reliance on mineral resources and heavy chemical industry, the surrounding areas of Dongting Lake discharged a large amount of wastewater, exhaust gas, and waste residue into Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River Basin.

On April 25, 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping took a boat from Yichang, Hubei to inspect the Yangtze River and came to Yueyang, Hunan, and put forward the entrustment of "guarding a clear river" by the Yangtze River.

In recent years, Yueyang has shown the determination and courage to fight against the chaos that has damaged the ecological environment of the Yangtze River, such as illegal fishing and chemical encirclement.

A few years before the fishing ban, there were hardly any fish to catch in the lake. After systematic management, the water in Dongting Lake has now become clear and there are more fish. The Wuzu of the Zhou Dynasty lived on Dongting Lake for three generations. Starting from January 1, 2020, productive fishing was completely banned in key areas of the Yangtze River Basin. Yueyang County established a fishing protection team to crack down on illegal fishing. As a party member, he took the lead in handing over boats, getting ashore, patrolling lakes, and raising shrimp, transforming from a fisherman into a "fishing protection expert" and a "wealth making expert".

In recent years, fishermen in the area near Dongting Lake in Yueyang City who wash their feet and go ashore have vigorously developed aquaculture by transferring low-lying fields to engage in fish and shrimp mixed farming and rice and shrimp co cultivation.

Like Zhou Jiewu, Liu Xiaoyun also lived a new life on the shore. She opened a shop in the ecological fishing village of Liumenzha Community, Qianlianghu Town, Junshan District, Yueyang City, where she removed scales, sliced fish, pickled, cleaned, and dried them. At most, she hired around ten retired fishermen to make hundreds of kilograms of dried fish a day. In just a few years, her store expanded from an initial one freezer to a scale of nine freezers and four cold storage units.

Liumenzha Community is adjacent to Dongting Lake, with 76 households and 152 approved fishermen who have been released from fishing. The community actively helps fishermen who have retired from fishing to switch jobs through the development of aquaculture, conduct skill training, and register for the National Geographic Indication Agricultural Product Certification of "Liumenzha Dried Fish". The Liumenzha Dried Fish Association has been established. Now, returning fishermen rely on the aquaculture and processing industry to enjoy the "ecological rice" again. The annual output of the Liumenzha air dried fish industry is nearly 3000 tons, with an output value of nearly 200 million yuan.

In terms of ecological environment protection, it is necessary to calculate the major account, long-term account, overall account, and comprehensive account.

From relocating twice due to environmental requirements to occupying the market with environmentally friendly products, Hunan Fucheng Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd.'s path of green transformation is quite dramatic and representative. In 2021, less than a year after the new factory area in Linjiang was put into use, the enterprise had to relocate as a whole to the Linxiang High tech Zone Green Chemical Industry Park. Through this relocation, the enterprise has undergone technological upgrades and equipment updates, not only improving production efficiency but also significantly reducing energy consumption. It has also won honors such as provincial champion enterprise and "green factory" in Hunan Province.

The withdrawal and relocation of chemical enterprises along the Yangtze River is not simply a physical relocation, but rather forces them to transform towards greenery, refinement, and high-end, significantly reducing the total amount of pollution discharge.

In recent years, Yueyang has withdrawn 35 papermaking and pulp enterprises, relocated 26 chemical enterprises along the Yangtze River through customs clearance, rejected more than 150 high-energy consumption and high pollution projects, and continuously utilized ecological resource endowments to enhance the "gold content", "new content", and "green content" of the industry, cultivating five advantageous industrial chains with an output value of over 100 billion yuan, including modern logistics and cultural tourism. The open economy has achieved continuous innovation, achieving a transition from "chemical encirclement of the river" to "green protection of the river".

When people retreat and fish enter, birds sing on high branches; The finless porpoise chases the waves, while the elk gallops. The beautiful transformation of Dongting Lake is happening to the naked eye, and a poetic picture of living is slowly unfolding.
