The comprehensive evaluation results of the effectiveness of household waste classification in Shanghai in the first half of this year were released today. The average score of the 16 districts was 95.3 points, reaching an excellent level. Jing'an, Yangpu, and Hongkou ranked in the top three, maintaining a high level of effectiveness in source classification and the operation of the classification, transportation, and disposal system. Jinshan, Songjiang, and Qingpu ranked lower.
According to the Comprehensive Evaluation Method for the Effectiveness of Domestic Waste Classification in Shanghai in 2023, the Office of the Joint Conference on Promoting the Reduction of Domestic Waste Classification in Shanghai organized a comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of domestic waste classification in various districts, streets and towns, as well as key public institutions and public places in the first half of 2023.
The average score of each street and town in the city is 95.38 points. Among them, Xinhai Town, Xinjiangwancheng Street, Xincun Township, Daqiao Street, Wanxiang Town, Datuan Town, Nicheng Town, Zhijiang West Road Street, Tianmu West Road Street, and Anting Town rank in the top ten. Xinjiangwancheng Street, Xincun Township, Anting Town and other street and town have been among the top for three consecutive years, reflecting the strong measures taken by the local authorities in the standardization, normalization, and long-term management of garbage classification.
Jiuting Town, Yu Garden Street, Xidu Street, Yingpu Street, Puxing Road Street, Fengcheng Town, Shihua Street, Xiayang Street, Xianghuaqiao Street and Changxing Town rank lower.

Liming Village in Caolu Town, Pudong New Area, Lane 258 in Sanlin New Village, Pujin Street, Minhang District, Shengli Village in Pujiang Town, Minhang District, Yide Village in Sanlin Town, Pudong New Area, Longhu Licheng in Malu Town, Jiading District, Lvhua Xinyuan in Jiangwan Town, Hongkou District, Yonghe Village in Caolu Town, Pudong New Area, Minhui Second District in Xianghuaqiao Street, Qingpu District, and Lixing International Plaza Apartments in Huayang Road Street, Changning District all scored below 70 points in the evaluation.
Among the 75 tertiary hospitals participating in the evaluation in the city, 59 have reached the excellent level. Yueyang Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai Children's Hospital, and Shanghai Jing'an District Central Hospital are among the top three. The affiliated pediatric hospitals of Fudan University, Shanghai Pudong Hospital, and Shanghai Oriental Hospital, ranked 73-75, need to make progress.
Among the 13 major transportation hubs in the city, 11 have reached an excellent level, with Hongqiao Airport, Pudong East Station Long Distance Bus Station, and Pudong Airport ranking among the top three. Shanghai South Railway Station and Hongqiao Railway Station, ranked 12th and 13th respectively, need to make progress.
The Office of the Leading Group for Promoting the Reduction of Household Waste Classification in Schools in Shanghai evaluated the effectiveness of waste classification in 63 universities throughout the city. 61 universities achieved excellent levels, with Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Shanghai Xingjian Vocational College ranking in the top three. Shanghai University of Science and Technology and Shanghai Xingwei College, ranked 62nd and 63rd, need to make progress.
The latest data released by the Shanghai Greening and Urban Appearance Bureau shows that in the first half of this year, the amount of wet waste separated in Shanghai was 9024 tons/day, and the amount of wet waste separated remained stable at around 35% of the total dry and wet waste. The amount of recyclable waste separated was 7460 tons/day, and the amount of harmful waste separated was 1.98 tons/day. The effectiveness of household waste classification continued to consolidate.
A citizen evaluation survey on the effectiveness of household waste classification with 128400 participants showed that citizens were generally satisfied with Shanghai's waste classification work, with 95.7% of residents believing that waste classification has maintained a good trend and giving it a five-star rating.
However, there is still room for improvement in some areas of garbage classification work. More than 60% of citizens believe that the hardware facilities of garbage disposal points and garbage bin rooms need to be further improved and renovated. They hope to upgrade their functions such as hand washing, deodorization, and induction door opening, reflecting the needs and expectations of citizens for a better disposal environment and more convenient disposal methods.
