21.6 tons of black diamond pineapples departed from the Philippines and arrived at the Waigaoqiao Port in Shanghai yesterday after a 4-day voyage. After completing customs inspections such as cargo certificate verification, packaging inspection, and sampling inspection of harmful organisms at the newly approved designated supervision site for imported fruits, they were quickly cleared and released for sale.
Since the General Administration of Customs approved the establishment of a designated supervision site for imported fruits in the Waigaoqiao Port Area of Shanghai Port in February this year, in order to achieve efficient customs clearance speed, various fruits such as Vietnamese dragon fruit, Thai grapefruit, Australian fresh orange, Philippine black diamond pineapple, and banana have been competing to enter from the Waigaoqiao Port Area. The Waigaoqiao Customs has cumulatively supervised 458000 tons of imported fruits.
Jianong Food Holdings Co., Ltd. began operating imported fruits in 2011. Bananas and pineapples imported from Southeast Asia by Jianong account for more than 20% of the entire domestic market share. The logistics director of the company, Jiang Jianli, told reporters that the Philippine black diamond pineapple imported this time was grown in a dedicated plantation at 10 degrees north latitude, with a unique flavor and rich taste. The company made its first attempt to import this new product in November 2021, and after market validation, it was promoted through the 2022 CIIE platform and became popular overnight. At present, the import operation of this variety is fully mature, with an average of 20 containers imported from Shanghai Port every week, further radiating to the national market.
According to statistics, since the first China International Import Expo in 2018, 71 new fresh fruit varieties have been approved to enter China, including star fruits such as super sweet bananas, fresh avocado, and Ecuadorian unicorn. But in Shanghai, the largest port in the country, the increasing import volume of high-quality fruits on the first line has begun to manifest contradictions that do not match customs inspection resources. Taking Waigang as an example, Luo Zhen, Deputy Director of the Inspection Department of Waigang Customs, introduced that in the past, fruits from various countries entering from Waigang were inspected in frozen goods inspection warehouses or room temperature inspection warehouses. Due to the use of cold chain transportation for imported fruits, the temperature fluctuates between high and low after entering frozen or room temperature inspection warehouses. In addition, there are slight obstacles in customs clearance, which can easily affect the quality of fruits and shorten their shelf life. In response to the demand for faster customs clearance from imported fruit merchants and to ensure the entry of fresh fruits, the foreign port customs are actively striving for progress. In February this year, the General Administration of Customs approved the establishment of a designated supervision site for imported fruits in the Waigaoqiao Port Area of Shanghai Port.
It is reported that the new regulatory venue can accommodate 51 containers for inspection, and the container docking rate has increased by 1.2 times. At the same time, considering the unique expedited nature of fresh fruits, customs inspectors are equipped according to the shipping schedule to achieve "day to day inspection" as much as possible and reduce enterprise costs. Jiang Jianli said that from the actual operation of Jianong, since the new site was put into operation, fruit imports have been able to increase in scale and speed up, and the release time for a single batch of fruits has been compressed by 25% year-on-year.
Shanghai is the largest distribution center for imported consumer goods in China. In the first half of this year, Shanghai imported 1.034 million tons of dried and fresh fruits and nuts, accounting for a quarter of the total import volume in the country.
