The eastern section of Shanghai North Cross Passage will achieve the main structure connection, and the project will be completed by the end of this year
New progress has been made in the construction of the North Cross Passage, the second east-west transportation artery in Shanghai. With the gradual entry of the 15 meter diameter super large shield tunnel "Zongheng Hao" into the tunnel, the 8th section of the North Cross Passage has achieved full connectivity today.
The total length of the new construction project for the North Cross Passage is about 19.1 kilometers, with an underground tunnel section of about 14.7 kilometers, a western tunnel section of 7.8 kilometers, and an eastern tunnel section of 6.9 kilometers. Among them, Section 8 has a total length of 2842 meters and is invested and constructed by Shanghai Urban Investment Highway Investment Co., Ltd. It is jointly constructed by Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Urban Construction Municipal Engineering Co., Ltd. It includes two sections: Huangxing Road Well Yangshupu Port Well and Yangshupu Port Well Anguo Road Well.
It took the Zongheng Express a year and a half from the Huangxing Road working well to today's arrival at the Anguo Road working well. "The eastern section of the North Cross Passage is different from the western section. The western section of the project requires crossing many old buildings, and construction should pay special attention to settlement issues. The eastern section is concentrated in the central urban area, facing difficulties such as dense pipelines, narrow working areas, and traffic organization." said Huang Guobin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Urban Investment Highway Group, and Commander of the North Cross Passage Project Site Command.
Complex working conditions force technological innovation. During the construction process, the "Zongheng Hao" broke multiple records. From April 19th to April 24th, 2023, the shield tunneling successfully crossed Line 4 of the rail transit at the intersection of Zhoujiazui Road and Baoding Road, achieving the four "best" of the 15 meter level shield tunneling under rail transit in China: minimum clearance, maximum slope, steepest curve, and minimum angle.
From November 18th to November 21st last year, the "Zongheng" shield tunneling took 4 days to cross the operating Rail Transit Line 18, and finally completed the crossing of the 21st Ring Road within 65 hours, setting a record for the smallest deformation of rail transit caused by crossing since the construction of the North Cross Passage.
At present, the eastern section of the North Cross Passage is mainly undergoing shield tunneling. At present, the shield tunneling of the main line in the eastern section of the North Cross Passage has been completed by 90%, and the open cut section has been completed by 60%. It is expected to achieve the structural connection of the main line in the eastern section by the end of this year, laying the foundation for the completion and opening to traffic in the first half of next year.
