Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port Area Haitong International Automobile Terminal has just sent off the "Turandot" foreign trade roll on/roll off vessel, which is carrying 2464 domestically produced new energy vehicles and is being shipped to countries such as Japan and Australia. According to statistics from Shanghai Customs, in the first seven months of this year, Shanghai exported 1.022 million vehicles at ports, a year-on-year increase of 54.8%, ranking first among all ports in the country and continuing to maintain its position as the "leader".

Haitong Port is one of the largest automobile export ports in China. Since 2020, Haitong Port has embarked on a frenzy of exports, with 2 to 3 car roll on/roll off ships departing almost every day. So far this year, the port has completed the export of 567000 vehicles, of which more than 30% are new energy vehicles.

The unprecedented export flux poses a test on the capacity of the port and the speed of customs clearance, requiring breaking away from conventional practices and continuously tapping into potential in efficiency. Lv Zhiqin, Deputy Director of the Inspection Department of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port Customs, introduced that with the addition of customs facilitation measures such as "early declaration", "direct loading upon arrival", and "zero delay inspection and release", Haitong Port has achieved 24-hour operation and made every effort to assist in the export of domestic vehicles. "We pay special attention to utilizing the advantage of river sea connectivity here and actively undertaking the demand for domestic automobile exports along the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Since the beginning of this year, more than a quarter of foreign ports' automobile exports have been made through the river sea intermodal transportation model."
Apart from Haitong Port, Nangang Port, located in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai Free Trade Zone, has begun to undertake the import and export car roll on/roll off ship business of Waigaoqiao Port gradually moving southward in recent years. Currently, the route has extended to nearly 30 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, South America, North America, and more. The proportion of new energy vehicles exported from Nangang Port is as high as 80%. In the first seven months of this year, 176000 domestically produced vehicles were exported, of which 141000 new energy vehicles were exported, a year-on-year increase of 73.9%.

Due to the strong export of automobiles at Shanghai Port, the main reliance for automobile exports is on the urgent capacity of roll on/roll off ships. Since last year, as a bulk cargo terminal, Zhanghuabang Port has consciously rushed to provide assistance. On December 15th last year, 40 BYD pure electric trucks departed from Zhanghuabang Port and headed to Chennai, India, becoming the first batch of cars exported from the port. It is reported that among the 29 measures newly introduced by Shanghai Customs to promote stable scale and optimized structure in foreign trade, measures to support the expansion of exports of domestically produced new energy vehicles are also included, such as providing regulatory services such as "appointment inspection" and "specialized docking".
At the end of 2022, Wu Song Customs officers will supervise a batch of new energy engineering vehicles that BYD is about to export to India.
