Transforming sorted garbage into treasure in front of children and allowing them to experience garbage classification firsthand and gain recognition is an effective way to promote garbage classification on campus.

After nearly 4 years of practice, Shanghai Qibao Experimental Primary School has released a series of garbage classification standards today. This is the first campus garbage classification standard system released by schools in China.

Correct classification for changing stars

The Jiefang Daily Shangguan News reporter noticed that the standard system includes guidelines for the configuration of recyclable site facilities, guidelines for setting up "green points" for garbage classification, guidelines for rewarding and redeeming garbage classification points, guidelines for common recyclables/hazardous waste/dry waste disposal on campus, design guidelines for garbage classification education courses for lower/higher grades, and evaluation guidelines for campus garbage classification learning.

These standards are all derived from the years of implementation of garbage classification rules at Qibao Experimental Primary School.

The reporter saw a lemon yellow "container" not far from the school gate at the Shanghai campus of Qibao Experimental Primary School, which is actually a centralized dumping point for recyclable materials and hazardous waste.

The 5 windows of the container are arranged in order from Monday to Friday, indicating the types of garbage that can be disposed of each day: Monday waste fabric, Tuesday waste paper, Wednesday waste plastic, Thursday waste metal and glass, Friday button batteries or rechargeable batteries, and other harmful garbage. Since the start of school in the autumn of 2019, this "container" has always adhered to this classification standard.

Shen Xinyu, a fourth grade student, brought a few clothes that she didn't need after the season change today. She handed them over to the on duty volunteer parents and typed a star on her points card.

"Send the sorted garbage over every day, you can knock on one star, collect 100, and you can exchange for one golden star!" Shen Xinyu said. Throughout the semester, by adhering to garbage sorting every day, you can have one golden star, which can be exchanged for learning supplies or popular extracurricular practice activities. You can also hang a sign for green plants on campus in your own name, or even have breakfast alone with the principal, representing students to ask questions and provide suggestions.

More identification with classification significance

According to the Shanghai Municipal Regulations on the Management of Domestic Waste, domestic waste in Shanghai is classified into recyclable materials, hazardous waste, wet waste, and dry waste according to the "four classification" standards.

But at the Shanghai campus of Qibao Experimental Primary School, recyclable materials not only need to be further subdivided, but also need to be pre processed according to requirements. For example, waste fabrics should be washed and dried, folded neatly, tied with ropes, and buttons and zippers should not be removed. For example, PET plastic bottles should have their caps unscrewed, the liquid inside the bottle emptied, rinsed, and placed together with the caps in transparent or semi transparent plastic bags.

Why does the school have to do the same thing? Wang Jin, the principal of Qibao Experimental Primary School in Shanghai, stated that the specific classification standards for household waste will be adjusted according to the level of economic and social development, characteristics of household waste, and disposal and utilization needs. Although Shanghai currently implements the "four classifications", referring to advanced domestic and foreign experience, after a period of development, further subdivision and disposal of household waste is the mainstream trend.

"We have found that although the 'four classifications' are relatively easy to remember and master, for children, a more refined classification can better promote their recognition of the meaning of garbage classification. Wang Jin said that only by pre processing according to requirements and being a type that can be recycled on the same day, the' container 'will be collected. Otherwise, the garbage that children work hard to bring to school will be rejected. This is to strengthen the concept that only correctly classified and pre processed garbage can be' turned into treasure 'and have value.".

That is to say, correctly classifying and preprocessing garbage is reasonable and meaningful, and such education is more deeply rooted in people's hearts than rigid legal propaganda and empty rhetoric.

Outside the restaurant in the northeast corner of the school, the reporter noticed a wet waste disposal system.

It is reported that this system can "eat" 500 kilograms of wet garbage every day, decompose the wet garbage through microbial communities, and produce water, oil, and a small amount of powdered solid waste that meets national emission standards. Wastewater is discharged through urban sewage pipelines, waste oil can be used to produce biodiesel, and solid waste can be used as fertilizer for planting and greening.

After being processed by this system, the reduction rate of wet waste can reach 90% to 95%. That is to say, a bag of high-purity wet waste weighing about 1 kilogram is thrown into the machine, and only 50 to 100 grams of fertilizer are produced in the end, which is used to nourish the green plants in the school's wet waste science exhibition area. Students who actively participate in garbage classification can also be rewarded and brought home to plant flowers and grass.

The purpose of introducing wet waste treatment equipment is similar to setting up "containers", and it is also to allow children to have close contact with the entire process of turning waste into treasure, strengthen the value of correct classification, and make them recognize the significance of classification.

"At present, this standard is still at the enterprise standard level. We are collecting and analyzing more pilot experiences in garbage classification on Shanghai campuses, and based on this, we are promoting the development of campus related group standards." Li Wei, Deputy Secretary General of the Shanghai Enterprise Green Development Alliance, said that elevating a school's garbage classification rules to a standard is more conducive to replication and promotion. In the future, advanced experience in garbage classification in various industries in Shanghai can be "going out" through the development of standards and other methods.
