The first drop of urban tap water flowed from here, giving birth to the first batch of workers in the tap water industry, and establishing the first underground party branch in Shanghai's water supply industry. The building of Yangshupu Water Plant has undergone multiple expansions and renovations. According to historical records, in 1911, the water plant expanded its area to 140500 square meters; During 1930, the water plant expanded its area to 257000 square meters, making it the largest water plant in the Far East at that time. It is commendable that during the century long expansion and renovation period, Yangshupu Water Plant has always adhered to a unified architectural style, and the appearance of the castle style has never changed.
In terms of functionality, Yangshupu Water Plant has also undergone multiple renovations and upgrades. In the late 1980s to early 1990s, Yangshupu Water Plant carried out potential renovation and equipment expansion on the sedimentation tank, upgrading it to an automatic sludge discharge system. From 2004 to 2008, the 360000 ton deep treatment renovation project of Yangshupu Water Plant was successfully completed, pioneering the advanced treatment of Shanghai Water Plant.

The technical team has decided to adopt the engineering measure of "step-by-step renovation and phased construction". In construction, for the first time, new technologies such as full casing hard cutting and interlocking piles were extensively used, and BIM systems were used to achieve precise and information-based management throughout the entire process. After being put into operation in 2024, Yangshupu Water Plant will have a nationally leading water production process, providing 1.2 million cubic meters of high-quality drinking water to 3 million citizens every day.
