Fuxing Island, Zhangjiang Station, and Cenbu Village are included in the design scope, and the 2023 Shanghai Urban Design Challenge will launch Zhangjiang | City | Zhangjiang Station
On August 4th, the 2023 Shanghai Urban Design Challenge, a key collaborative project between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Shanghai, was launched. Points such as Yangpu Fuxing Island, Zhangjiang Science City Zhangjiang Station on the city airport connecting line, and Cenbu Village were included in the design scope.
The first Shanghai Urban Design Challenge was held in 2016. Compared with previous editions, this year's competition has been comprehensively upgraded, with a significant increase in types and awards, aiming to create a national level urban design platform. In terms of genre, this year's competition has expanded from the original Challenge Design Competition to the Shanghai International Urban Design Award, Typical Block Urban Design Competition, and Small and Micro Space Urban Design Competition. In terms of awards, a total of 56 awards are set up in 9 categories.
Typical block design focuses on small and medium-sized spaces
The locations that have received attention, such as Fuxing Island, Cenbu Village, and Zhangjiang Science City, are typical urban design competitions for small and medium-sized blocks. "This year, we are focusing on four types of neighborhoods: urban renewal, green ecology, rail transit stations, and rural revitalization." Wu Panfeng, Director of the Detailed Planning Department of the Shanghai Municipal Planning and Resources Bureau, said that these design sites are all located in national major strategic areas and key areas for recent urban development.
In terms of urban renewal, the area north of Hai'an Road on Fuxing Island and the riverside area of Fuxing Island Canal in Yangpu District is chosen as the base, with an area of approximately 50 hectares. Wu Panfeng said that the reason for choosing Fuxing Island is because it is a strategic blank area for Shanghai, and it needs to be reserved in urban design in advance. Therefore, the competition requires the creation of a "high-quality waterfront space", focusing on the openness of the waterfront space, ecological space design, vitality and function creation, landscape style control, protection and continuation of the ecological system and cultural heritage of Fuxing Island and the waterfront area, and improvement of regional service functions.
In terms of green ecology, Zhangjiang Science City Zhangjiang Station and the surrounding outer green belt area are selected as the base, with an area of about 100 hectares. The base is located near the Kangxin Road in the northeast corner of Kangqiao Town's outer ring green belt. The airport connecting line and rail transit line 21 have set up Zhangjiang Station within the base, which has been included in the planning of Zhangjiang Science City. The competition requires the creation of an "ecological and dynamic regional gateway", the study of functional development planning for rail transit stations in ecological areas, the overall study of regional spatial form, the planning and design of the ecological landscape and slow traffic network of the outer green belt, and the creation of distinctive and dynamic outer green belt nodes.
In terms of rail transit stations, the design emphasizes the intensive development of urban space and the concept of TOD. Choose the area around Dongjing Station, a transfer station on the western extension of Line 9 and Line 12 of Songjiang District Rail Transit, as the base, with an area of approximately 133 hectares. The competition requires the creation of a "harmonious and integrated city of farmland, forests, and water", the study of functional development planning around rail transit stations in urban-rural border areas, the overall study of the spatial form of urban development and the integration of suburban farmland and forests, and the planning and design of the green environmental ecological space and slow traffic network in Songjiang New City.
In terms of rural revitalization, the concentrated construction area of rural residential areas in Cenbu Village, Jinze Town, Qingpu District and the surrounding farmland environment are selected as the base, covering an area of approximately 30 hectares. The base is located in the central part of Jinze Town, Qingpu District, and belongs to the pilot launch area of the Yangtze River Delta Ecological Green Integration Development Demonstration Zone. The competition requires the creation of "sustainable rural revitalization demonstration points", clarifying the development path of rural revitalization in Cenbu Village, and exploring sustainable operation models and methods in rural areas.
Small and Micro Space Design Focuses on "Six Art Pavilions"
"Liuyi Pavilion" refers to a small, multi-functional service facility with flexible and scattered layout in the 15 minute community living circle of Shanghai. This year, the small and micro space urban design competition focuses on the "Six Art Pavilions".
The "Six Art Pavilions" are divided into universal and on-site types. The universal "Six Art Pavilion" can overcome the pain points of insufficient design strength at the grassroots level, and the grassroots can choose a suitable design solution from the universal "Six Art Pavilion" design library. This year, we will also choose one base each in Xuhui Binjiang and Minhang District to carry out on-site "Six Art Pavilions" creative design with more regional characteristics.
The Xuhui Binjiang Base is located in the WS3 unit of Xuhui Binjiang, which is the starting point of the "West Coast Cultural Corridor". The west side is the Dragon Art Museum, the east side is the Star Art Museum, and the north side is adjacent to the West Coast Financial City. A "Six Art Pavilion" is planned to be set up here, with a building area of 100 to 200 square meters, including a 50 meter public area site design and overall spatial and functional design of the building.
The Minhang District base is located in Jinxin Garden, Pujin Green Space, on the east side of Pujin Road in Pujin Street. Jinxin Garden is an open community park mainly composed of lawns, covering an area of approximately 3.06 hectares. Here, we plan to set up a "Six Art Pavilion" with a building area of 300 to 400 square meters, which is in line with the ecological, resilient, and beautiful characteristics of the garden community. It will provide rich public services that cater to the diverse needs of the population and various scenarios, and become a characteristic spatial node in the community living circle.
The reporter learned from the Shanghai Municipal Planning Bureau that the winning achievements and ideas of the Shanghai Urban Design Competition will be applied in actual project construction. The newly renovated Xujiahui Sports Park, the front square of Shanghai Cinema, and the four blocks of Zhenxin South in the Jiading Key Industrial Development Zone, which are currently under construction, are all important design points for the previous Urban Design Challenge, and have also demonstrated new design concepts during the project landing.
