16 globally threatened species... The results of the first synchronized survey of waterbirds in the Yangtze River Delta have been released, with 109 species and 1.15 million waterbirds in the Yangtze River Delta | Survey results
How many birds come from thousands of miles to winter in the Yangtze River Delta region of China every year? What kind of bird is most fond of this place?
The Shanghai Greening and Urban Appearance Bureau announced today that the results of the first synchronized survey of overwintering waterbirds in the Yangtze River Delta region have been released. A total of 109 species and 1150958 waterbirds were recorded in the survey, of which 106508 were recorded in 65 species in Shanghai; Jiangsu Province recorded 82 species with 436583 individuals; Zhejiang Province recorded 79 species and 130936 individuals; Anhui Province recorded 66 species with 476931 individuals.

The most common group recorded in this survey is the wild goose and duck, accounting for 69% of the total number of waterbirds counted. The top 10 water birds with the highest number are the bean goose/short billed bean goose, spotted billed duck, raised nosed duck, common cormorant, ribbed duck, green headed duck, white bone top, black bellied sandpiper, flower faced duck, and backbilled sandpiper. These 10 common water birds account for 73% of the total recorded population.
This survey recorded 29 species of national key protected birds, including 13 species of national first-class protected birds, including: blue headed diving duck, Chinese autumn sand duck, white crane, white pillow crane, red crowned crane, white headed crane, black stork, oriental white stork, black faced spoonbill, curled feather pelican, white pelican, black billed gull, and relict gull; 16 species of birds under national second level protection. 16 threatened species have been recorded worldwide, including 2 critically endangered species, 5 endangered species, and 9 vulnerable species.

A total of 19 investigation teams and more than 150 investigators were organized to conduct surveys on 118 coastal and inland wetlands in three provinces and one city during the winter waterbird survey. According to the recorded bird population at a single location, 14 survey locations recorded over 20000 waterbirds.
The survey found that the number of 36 species of waterbirds meets the internationally significant standards. These waterbirds are distributed in 53 wetlands, among which the locations with a higher proportion of waterbird species reaching 1% of the population are Caizi Lake and Shengjin Lake National Nature Reserve in Anhui, Huanghu Lake, Huangpi Lake Wetland and Bohu Lake, Andong Wetland in Zhejiang, and Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve in Shanghai.

The Shanghai Forestry Department stated that this synchronous investigation has preliminarily identified the species, quantity, and distribution of overwintering waterbirds in the Yangtze River Delta region, providing scientific basis for further strengthening the protection of waterbirds and habitats in key areas of the East Asia Australia migration zone, and also providing case and data support for regional cooperation in biodiversity conservation in the ecological and green integration development of the Yangtze River Delta region.
