Shanghai Publishing debuted at the Beijing International Book Expo, showcasing the achievements of "going global" projects | culture | books
The 29th Beijing International Book Expo was held at the Beijing National Convention Center from June 15th to 18th. Shanghai carefully organized nearly 30 publishing houses in the city to participate in the exhibition, with nearly 2000 types of books exhibited, showcasing the excellent achievements of Shanghai's publishing industry in going global.
Shanghai Publishing highlights major themes, encourages originality, and focuses on launching high-quality works that are worthy of the times and the people.The "Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" won the "Five One Project" Award for the 16th Spiritual Civilization Construction.
The "Cultural China" series of books in foreign languages is a key national "going out" project undertaken by Shanghai Century Publishing Group. The "Cultural China" series of books focuses on Chinese culture, edited directly in English, and published and distributed in overseas book markets. At present, the total scale of this series of books has exceeded 400, with nearly 70 new English versions published and 73 reprints, achieving a reprint rate of 53%. 22 varieties have been translated into German, French, Italian, Polish, Bulgarian, and Czech and published in various countries, with a total of nearly 50 published varieties. The readership of the "Cultural China" series of books is distributed in 43 countries and regions in Europe, America, and Asia Pacific, with a total distribution of over 1.4 million copies. At this year's CIIE, more than 70 new and long-term varieties, including "A Brief History of Chinese Culture in Fifty Treasures," "Zhuangzi's Hundred Sentences," "Four Seasons Ink Painting," and "Hundred Birds Facing the Phoenix," from the "Series of Books," will be showcased.
The Shanghai Copyright "Going Global" Support Project began in 2013, aiming to encourage and support excellent copyright projects to go abroad, expand the international competitiveness and influence of Chinese culture. As of 2022, more than 200 "going global" projects have been funded and published, with a total funding amount of over 8 million yuan.
With the support of special funds, Shanghai has established the Translation and Publishing Promotion Plan since 2015 to support and encourage outstanding foreign translators to translate Chinese works and expand the international influence of Chinese culture. As of 2022, the Shanghai Translation and Publishing Promotion Program has sponsored the publication of nearly 40 books, covering 24 languages including English, Korean, French, Japanese, Italian, and German. This time, new books in recent years, such as "Chronicles of Changwu", "Fire - Searching for the Road to China's Revival", and "Red Alley" will be exhibited. The selected books for national "going out" projects such as the "Classic China International Publishing Project" and the "Silk Road Book Fragrance Publishing Project" in Shanghai will also be highlighted.
This year's CIIE aims to create a large-scale international cultural exchange feast for the international publishing industry and readers, integrating functions such as copyright trade, publishing display, cultural exchange, professional discussions, and reading promotion, with offline as the main focus, online support, and offline and online integration.
This year's Art Expo is hosted by the National Press and Publication Administration, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Beijing Municipal People's Government, the China Writers Association, and the China Publishing Association. This year, 56 countries and regions have participated in the exhibition, with 1500 domestic and foreign publishers and related institutions participating offline. More than 200000 types of Chinese and foreign books will be showcased, including about 900 overseas exhibitors, accounting for 60%. Algeria will participate as a guest of honor on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Algeria.
